Book Description

March 2, 2010
A charming introduction to the inspired and inspiring cottages and bungalows of Venice, California.

More than a century ago, when Abbot Kinney built his Venice-of-America with its network of canals and fanciful buildings, cultural aspirations were high. Over the years, this aura of fantasy and imaginative possibility endured as integral to the zeitgeist of the place. Today, this spirit of innovation and creativity is richly expressed in the vintage bungalows and cottages that have been embraced and brought back to life by homeowners more in love with place than size. Stalwart survivors of the ebb and flow of the area’s fortunes over a century, these small homes channel the creative spirit of the place and provide a welcome counterpoint to oversize houses. Color, landscape, treasured collections, personal narrative, contemporary overlays and additions, art and craft, and inventive design—all combine in various ways to produce domestic environments with unique and deeply personal points of view.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"California's Venice canals stand out even in a state known for its unique living. Margaret Bach's new release Cottages in the Sun showcases some of the best bungalows along the area's charm-packed walks." ~C Magazine

"In their new book Cottages in the Sun: Bungalows of Venice, California, writer Margaret Bach and photographer Melba Levick take us on a tour of the charming homes that line the footpaths and canals of Venice. Most of the homes date back to about 100 years ago, to not long after tobacco millionaire Abbott Kinney first envisioned the area as America's version of the Italian destination." ~LATimes.com

"A new-ish publication from Rizzoli, New York, this looks fantastically interesting... Hidden Gems abound, this is a great pick up." ~The Reference Council

"...a 'must have' coffee table book for those that love Venice.... 240 pages of wonderful color pictures that anyone with an interest in architecture, interior design or just plain old lookie-loo-at the neighbors will enjoy." ~Yo! Venice!

4.0 out of 5 stars Venice cottages, September 11, 2010

This review is from: Cottages in the Sun: Bungalows of Venice, California (Hardcover)

Great photography! Wonderful overview of some of the clever, creative vernacular architecture of California's crown jewel of beach towns. Only complaint is could have had a little better overview of some of the houses and some floor plans but these are minor considerations. This is a long overdue book on Venice's domestic architecture.

Beautifully photographed, exploring interiors and exteriors of a charming and eclectic selection of homes in a creative beach community. Light is used photographically to best display these homes, gardens and streets. A lovely book to pore over and to leave on the table for others to enjoy. Colorful and relaxing.
