I love the flexibility of these inserts, they work great with my Flip shells/covers. They are a bit bulky for my BG 4.0 Pocket diaper.
Pros:
1. Easy to use, simply fold down to to where you want them and place them in your shell. Fold in the front for boys and the back for girls. Or use them without folding for larger/toddler diapers.
2. I can use two inserts for extra absorbency for my toddler when the shells/diaper covers are on the biggest setting. I love to stuff 2 of them in my BG 'Stay Dry Socks' for easy loading into my Flip covers. (Stay dry is the white material of the BG pocket diapers, thin and suede like & it wicks moisture off the babies skin.)
3. Fast drying in the dryer unlike many cotton or hemp based inserts.
General Cons:
A. After 6 months or so, I was unable to get the stink out of them with the manufacture's recommended soap & washing.
B. They act as 'color catchers' in the wash if washed with any regular clothing (i.e. dirty/soiled kids clothes...)
3. Some kids are sensitive to the microfiber material, it should not touch their skin directly, we used small fleece liners to protect the sensitive areas.

Overall an easy to maintain insert.

1+ YEAR UPDATE: After over a year of use I did find the microfiber to be harsh on my kids bum, forcing me to buy fleece liners to top them with. And I found the smell hard to get out of them when using the manufacture's detergent (BumGenius). I would wash & wash, and all the cotton & hemp would smell like nothing (aka clean), but the microfiber would still stink like poo, despite bleach, vinegar, baking soda, I tried it all (separately so as not to pass out in the laundry room from fumes...

Really not necessary. Diapers purchased come with two inserts already. a small one and a regular or larger one. Returned them.

I loathe these. I have used BGs from my sister in law and they came without inserts. A friend bought a package of these and prepped them, decided that she didn't like the one aplix BG she'd bought to try and didn't have time to do any research or hunting into other CD options and stuck with disposables. So I got her package of basically unused inserts. THEY ARE AWFUL. Synthetics are terrible to wash. They repel if you look at them wrong, suffer compression leaks (Baby pees, you pick Baby up and squeeze out the pee... BRILLIANT. Not.) and don't hold through the night. BG unhelpfully suggested that since I got them used they might be at the end of their absorbency. Well, no, I didn't get them used... I got them after they were washed once. I'm the only one who's actually used them. And what, pray tell, is their expected life expectancy? It's been 2 months and these buggers seem to be dying. Thanks, but for something that cannot biodegrade, 2 months is a terrible lifespan, if that's all these have. I loathe these. LOATHE them. I was thinking they'd make CDing easy for daycare. I have some cotton fitteds on order and hopefully will be getting them today. Those will hopefully work better. I dislike pockets and hate these. I hate all-in-ones, too. Pockets and AIOs just feel like so much more laundry. Covers can be reused, but pockets cannot. The only thing I like about the pockets is the stay-dry layer that helps for naptime, but I can't figure out how to stuff one for overnight for a heavy wetter, so they're useless for that, too. If I have a second kid I'm not using my BGs except as back-up/emergency.
