5.0 out of 5 stars Live! Spectacular!, December 20, 2007
This review is from: Cotton Club 1 1938 (Audio CD)
These well annotated gem from the "archives of jazz" gives you sophisticated orchestra at its peak, playing live (which, admittedly, means that some songs are less creative than others).

For the full bend see my tags, and the small group on Dowtown Uproar consists of C. Williams (tp), Joe Nanton (tb), Hodges, Carney, Elington, Hayes Alvis on bass and the drummer Greer.
Don't forget; there is also an equally rewarding volume 2 of this! It's about time someone reissues it as a double CD pack...

Songs on this one:

1 Harmony in Harlem (Ellington-Hodges)
2 Dinah (Akst-Lewis-Young)
3 At Your Beck and Call (Ram)
4 If You Were in My Place (Nemo-Ellington)
5 Oh, Babe! Maybe Someday (Ellington)
6 Downtown Uproar (Williams)
7 If Dreams Come true (Sampson-Goodman)
8 Birmingham Breakdown (Ellington)
9 You Went To My Head (Meyer-Emmerich-Bernier)
10 Rose Room (Williams-Hickman)
11 The Gal from Jones (Ellington)
12 Riding on A Blue Note (Ellington-Redmond)

I omitted "Mills" from the list of authors for he is, as far as I know, a manager who never contributed to Ellington's writing...
