Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Here's an unexpected treat, the first release of Karen Dalton (1938-1993) recordings, aside from her scant two studio albums, 1969's It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best and 1971's In My Own Time. In the vein of the Captain Beefheart set, Grow Fins, much work has gone in to make these low-fidelity recordings sound better--but they're still just live recordings from a small folk club in Denver in 1962 called The Attic. It's definitely a fans-only release, but it's hard to imagine anyone really listening to this imaginative and heart-breaking song interpreter and not becoming a rabid fan. Like her friend and mentor Fred Neil, the jazzy folk chanteuse was an exceptionally talented artist with substance abuse issues and a strong dislike for the spotlight. Dalton had to essentially be tricked into her first recording date (she'd been told it was a Fred Neil session) and she took so long to make her second one, it was amazing it ever got done. Supposedly, Dalton did not want any recordings of the sort on this release to be issued. But it's such a joy to hear her here, especially when she gets really ragged and raw (and still achingly beautiful) on traditional numbers like "Prettiest Train" and "Old Hannah." --Mike McGonigal

Product Description

2 CD gatefold jacket with 21 tracks = 85 minutes of never before released 1962 live reel-to-reel recordings. Remastered at Abbey Road Studios by Peter Mew. Ultra-rare recordings since Karen Dalton only released 2 LPs. Karen Dalton's influence on her famous friends and peers (Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin) is well established. The gatefold jacket is similar to '60s heavy cardboard LP jackets with inner CD sleeves. Includes a 10 page booklet with photos of Karen and the Attic Club in Boulder in 1962/63 (featuring The Byrds' David Crosby). Liner notes by Joe Loop (club owner and friend of Karen Dalton. North American release includes bonus DVD not available on European import copies of this title. DVD contains live footage of Karen Dalton circa 1969-70.

This is great. Not much more to say but I was appalled by one 3 star review; thought I'd bump up the average.
DVD is great too, less so when the French narrator talks over her performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars True American Treasure, May 19, 2009
This review is from: Cotton Eyed Joe (2CD+DVD) (Audio CD)
This is a great package, raw and beautiful, at times even jawing dropping in nuances of performance few possess in our own time. I listen to it over and over. All Karen's recordings are true American treasures, and we are fortunate to have this one released by the French concern Megaphone. I thank them endlessly.

Karen Dalton's been lauded by artists from Devendra Banhart to Dylan--for a reason. She's the you-know-what, seductive, powerful, sincere, traditional but completely herself. Larger than life like a great bluesman, she's got freedom without a whit of pretension. This is a great collection, too. You won't regret it.
