5.0 out of 5 stars Jesus Christ Superstar meets the Dukes of Hazzard!
Well, not exactly that, but nonetheless absolute required reading.

This book, and Clarence Jordan's other 'versions,' are among the most remarkable and excellent books I've ever read. From the first page to the last, faith, humor, and love radiate from these books. What they are, basically, are very faithful retellings of the life of Christ in modern times, in the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Mockery
I think that no person that even thinks of him/herself as being a christian should study this 'bible'. In my opinion it is a very huge mockery of Christ and his life and doings here on earth. I have not personally read the book, but i have heard about it. And as a christian i don't even think it should be thought of like that book puts it, much less on shelves for...

This review is from: The Cotton Patch Version of Paul's Epistles (Paperback)
Well, not exactly that, but nonetheless absolute required reading.

This book, and Clarence Jordan's other 'versions,' are among the most remarkable and excellent books I've ever read. From the first page to the last, faith, humor, and love radiate from these books. What they are, basically, are very faithful retellings of the life of Christ in modern times, in the American South, and an insightful commentary on faith and prejudice in this country.

Keep in mind, these are not intended to mock Christ, or fool anyone. The author himself plainly stated that "obviously the 'Cotton Patch' version must not be used as a historical text. The Revised Standard Version and the New English Bible are excellent for this purpose."

The entire text of Clarence Jordan's "Cotton Patch" books are available for free reading online, so see for yourself.

My personal favorite are the Cotton Patch versions of Matthew and John. As an example of the unique humor and writing style, here's Matthew 9:16:

"Nobody ever uses new, unshrunk material to patch a dress that's been washed. For in shrinking, it will pull the old material and make a tear. Nor do people put new tubes in old, bald tires. If they do, the tires will blow out, and the tubes will be ruined and the tires will be torn up. But they put new tubes in new tires and both give good mileage."
