Bringing peace to all that find them,
This review is from: Cotton Teeth (Audio CD)
I recently went to a mewithoutyou show in Detroit, not really knowing what to expect. There were three other opening bands, which I had never heard of before. The snake, the cross, the crown opened first with the beautiful "Cakewalk", and I was blown away. It's been a long time since I've gotten goosebumps from listening to a band play. I've never felt more at peace. The entire show that night was an incredible experience that I'll never forget. If you get the chance to see them in concert, I strongly suggest you do so. The album is amazing as well, full of upbeat tunes as well as beautiful melodies. Take a listen and I'm sure you won't regret it.

I love this album. Such slow paced, intense sound... They're coming out with a documentary soon that I am really looking forward to.

One of my all-time favorite albums,

This band/album is unique--definitely not just another alt-indie folk experiments that you struggle through as a listener in anticipation for the few moments that truly please the ear. "Behold the River" is a song that takes you on a musical journey through romanticized storytelling, to an alternative America or country that exists in the myth and legend of the past. If both of these horses... ... died. I freakin love that song man. And best of all, this album doesn't seem to get old. I listen to it all the time.

The Snake The Cross The Crown = My new drug,
This review is from: Cotton Teeth (Audio CD)
This band caught my ear when their previous release, Mander Salis, proved to be a solid album. I'll admit, I was never a fan of this type of music before. It's a new sound that has old influences. Several years ago, I was introduced to a band called The Shins, and boy did they tickle my fancy. The Snake The Cross The Crown has a very similar sound to this new popular genre known as 'folk rock' and they are easily up there in sound with The Shins. As a matter of fact, this album has become my new drug. Just listen to the first two tracks, and believe me my friend, you will be addicted as well.
Great album, highly recommended!

Maintaining Their Unique Sound,

A band that does something different every time they release an album is a hard thing to find. The Snake The Cross The Crown tends to combine a folk background with British Rock. Think Wilco getting together with Radiohead. I won't go on and on about this band. If you enjoyed Mander Salis, then you won't mind trying out Cotton Teeth. They are different, but the band remains the same with their talent in music. "Hey Jim" "Electronic Dream Planet" "Cotton Teeth" and "The Great American Smokeout" are a powerful foursome of songs you will take in and remember.

I would argue with those who say this album is a maturation from the previous albums, or being more cohesive. I look at their 3 albums (Including the 'Like a Moth before a Flame'ep) as seperate and equally successful attempts in different sub-genres of rock. Their previous two albums hold their own in terms of musical composition, lyrics and overall congruity.

this is a good album, with definite growth and maturity evident in the band. but this growth has been more towards a Folk influence, which although i like and am growing into, definitely dont enjoy as much as their prior stellar rock angle. preview the tracks and if it's your style, this is an amazing album. otherwise, if you havent already, pickup TSTCTC's second album: Mander Salis. it's amazing

Wonderful indie rock to warm your little soul,

This album has all of the trappings of The Snake The Cross The Crown's last album but it has fine tuned them and made them better. Everything they had in 'Mander Salis is in this fun, intense and masterfully produced album. A wonderful choice for anyone looking for simple, good, and as the band puts it "unassuming folk inspired rock."

Some people want to climb a mountain. Others wish to skydive. Still others choose to attempt writing a novel. All of these life-accomplishments are trivial in comparison to the pursuit of truly great music.
The Snake The Cross The Crown is simply THE best band you've never heard. Take acoustic, "Meddle"-era Pink Floyd, some of the best folk-melancholia of early Counting Crows, and add some truly original songwriting that defies comparison. One trip across this record and you will be unable to remove it from your CD player. I can only hope we hear more from these boys, and soon. |
