Borrow First - Not For Everyone,
By Siddielou (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cotton Theory Quilting: Quilt First-Then Assemble (Cotton Theory Series) (Paperback)
The author overly complicates the process of quilting as you go and relies heavily on machine embroidery to "quilt" with. While she does offer some helpful advice on bobbin work she fails to address how to adjust a bobbin tension for sewing machines with drop in bobbins (for those of us with vertical bobbins she correctly recommends buying a second bobbin case).
The projects are OK, well thought out, and the directions are clear but most of the quilts are basic squares and rectangles. If you are looking for help in working with traditional quilt designs (log cabin, bow tie, drunkard's path, etc) this isn't the book for you. I haven't reviewed the three other well known quilt as you go books yet but here are the titles for those who are interested: Quilt-As-You-Go by Sandra Millet Reversible Quilts: Two at a Time by Sharon Pederson Crazy Shortcut Quilts by Martguerita McManus (NOTE: this is different from crazy quilting) Happy quilting!

I loved doing this technique, but be forewarned that this book is poorly written and really requires an instructor who is familiar with cotton theory to make sense out of how to quilt this way.

I'm taking a class in this right now. What a wonderful and versatile way to quilt. Makes putting together much easier and you end up with two new quilts in one! I'd recommend this for anyone looking for an original and new way to easily quilt. Recommend to all, along with the DVD's.

trying out cotton theory,

This is an interesting technique of quilting. I took a class which required having a book. It is a lot of work and many in the class were very confused during the cutting process; that is just it - there is a ton of cutting since all the batting is cut as well as the fabric. For a reversible piece, again this is interesting, but I'm not rushing out to do another any time soon.

An easy to understand book explaining how to make a quilt-as-you go quilt. The passages detailing how to make a quilt is very easy and is a tremendous time saver. You can even bind your quilt on your sewing machine!

Terriblely disappointing. The new look of a quilt done with this method to me is quiite unattractive. Quicker results do not necessarily produce a better looking product.

Well written,
This review is from: Cotton Theory Quilting: Quilt First-Then Assemble (Cotton Theory Series) (Paperback)
This book is a very creative concept of a very traditional art. The instructions are very well written and also very comprehensive. The technique is an interesting one with quick and beautiful results as both sides of the project are sewn with decorative stitches at the same time.

Enjoyed the Book One of the series. The colorful illustrations and so easy to understand instructions plus the projects are delightful. What a way to make two quilts in the time it takes to make one. Looking forward to the next book.

I would have given it five stars if.........,

I was "dying" for this book and thought "wow this is going to be fantastic."
I think it'll take me ten years to learn this method! It's difficult to follow, even after taking a class! I feel like I need another class and hours and hours of sitting at the machine with the book and slowly working through it. I love Betty Cotton's projects. Unfortunately it is not an easy way to quilt. I will conquer this method even if it takes me ten years (and it might). I would have given it five stars if it was easy, but it's not!
