4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely and clever quilting method
I purchased this book because I was looking for an easier and more "arthritis-friendly" way to machine-quilt as I got older.
This 2nd edition for is the first of the Cotton series books that I have actually purchased and I found it to be comprehensive and very easy to use as the new techniques were backed up by pictures and illustrated designs for both sides of each...

I purchased this book because I was looking for an easier and more "arthritis-friendly" way to machine-quilt as I got older.
This 2nd edition for is the first of the Cotton series books that I have actually purchased and I found it to be comprehensive and very easy to use as the new techniques were backed up by pictures and illustrated designs for both sides of each of the quilts.
The Cotton Theory is based on cutting, piecing and then quilting ach of the individual smaller pieces of fabric for both front and back with pieces of batting sandwiched in the middle. It is then necessary to leave larger seams along the outside that can be folded and pieced together with different methods and then topstitched with your favorite machine embroidery stitch on either side of your quilt for embellishment.
Even though the technique is not difficult one definitely should start with a smaller project first such as placemats or a runner to practice the techniques. There is a bit of a learning curve to lining up the fancy stitching when you topstitch your seams.
The one and only downside I find with this technique is that it is somewhat resource intensive in terms of time and use of threads. Where the quilts are reversable, one must cut and piece as if cutting for 2 quilts (although the book shows the technique where that can be done simultaneously)
All in all, I have to say this technique is an unique and outstandingly beautiful way to decorate, embellish and add dimension to ones quilting projects that I will continue to use. And I especially appreciate now not having to fight with large amounts of fabric as I did when I previously attempted to quilt the tradional way.

I have the first book in this series and was glad to have an opportunity to get the second one. I love the method of quilting and I am looking forward to completing projects in this new book. It is a must have for a serious quilter.

I was disppointed as there was not enough instruction on "cottontheory." It was mostly quilting projects that you can get in any book.
