Abstract figures bubble with beauty, their intricate visual textures conjuring faces and places. Working in batik, Edward Adeniran portrays the figures in warm, golden tones with highlights in white. "Among the Yoruba people, the queen is a supreme figure. She is sitting in state," he says. "She has various masks, which she wears on different occasions for different purposes to prevent her subjects from seeing her true appearance. A tradition, which must be followed, forbids them to see her face."
