Book Description

January 31, 2005
Ever caught crawdads in the creek, played in a corncrib, or put on a circus for the whole town? Most people today no longer enjoy such old-fashioned pleasures, but that doesn’t mean they can’t experience them vicariously.

Harriett Dublin, rancher and storyteller, relates tales of her Depression-era childhood in her book The Cottonseed Kid: Childhood Memories of a Texas Life. A natural entertainer, Harriett’s stories are as engaging as they are enlightening, bringing to life a bygone era of ice cream sodas, chamber pots, and family farming. Harriett’s innate good sense mingles with faith in God, love for family, and a healthy dose of humor to make for a darn good read.

About the Author

Harriett Dublin’s remarkable adventures began as a Depression-era youngster on a ranch in the Texas Panhandle, the subject of her book The Cottonseed Kid: Childhood Memories of a Texas Life. Harriett asserted her independence at age eight when she added an extra T to the end of her name. Later, her feisty spirit prompted her to become an agricultural boss, running ranches in Texas, New Mexico, and Australia. Driven by her typical zeal and unwillingness to be categorized, Harriett has also designed and marketed her own clothing line, served as CEO of a major Texas property management corporation, and brought up five children. Today, in between frequent international adventures, she hangs her cowboy hat in Midland, Texas, where, in addition to raising quality cattle and horses, she indulges her passion for writing, painting, and cooking gourmet meals. She is also the author of Friday’s Child Cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cottonseed Kid - Childhood Memories of a Texas Life, January 16, 2006

This review is from: The Cottonseed Kid: Childhood Memories of a Texas Life (Hardcover)
Harriett Dublin's book "The Cottonseed Kid - Childhood Memories of a Texas Life" represents something I've encouraged countless people to do for years: write your personal family history. There is no greater gift you can give your descendants than a story of your life. Harriett walks the reader through her and her family's life in Panhandle of Texas in the middle of the twentieth century.  It describes a lot of old time family values that are getting harder and harder to find today. It is more of a reminiscence of a time past with the rose colored glasses of childhood memories than that of the beloved parents who work long and hard to provide for their family. But that is OK. That is how I remember my childhood too.One favorite features of the book are the old family recipes sprinkles through out the book. I have my mother's old recipes too, however that "pinch", "smidgen" and motherly love just never seem to match that of the original maker. The one story in the book that intrigues me the most, I'll just call it "Snap, Crackle & Pop, left me with more questions. What was it all about? You will just have to buy the book and find out.
