Book Description

October 19, 2009
Walter's life is a struggle to survive, there are times when he has to fight for every breath. This book will impress, inspire and enlighten readers on how extreme obstacles can be overcome by sheer guts and determination in the face of a chronic illness. It is also an entertaining travelogue of parts of Eastern Europe that few of us would visit, and certainly not on a 4,000 Km journey by bicycle with a less than 50% lung capacity. The story covers the planning and execution of an amazing journey by a small band of people, some of whom had not met each other before and who are thrown together in funny, poignant, and sometimes almost unendurable and frustrating circumstances. Central is the author, Walter who is 42 and has cystic fibrosis, which as many will know is a chronic and debilitating condition from which most people are lucky to survive into their 30's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raising the bar for the CF community, February 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Coughing the Distance: Paris to Istanbul with Cystic Fibrosis (Volume 2) (Paperback)
Walter's book is a great companion to the documentary (with the same title: "Coughing the Distance") chronicling his cycling odyssey from Paris to Istanbul. Here we learn more about the team's struggle getting the trip off the ground, what each team member contributes to the journey, the vagaries of GPS navigation and, most important, how Walter lives with his cystic fibrosis while spending hours each day on a bicycle (rain or shine). His lifelong effort to stay physically fit and his unquenchable delight in each stage of the journey raises the bar for what people with CF (or anyone living with a chronic illness) can accomplish. Four stars because the book needs one more go-around with an editor, but that isn't stopping me from sharing both the DVD and the book with many of my friends and acquaintances! I look forward to hearing about the next adventure....

This is an amazing real life story of the author who has been a source of great inspiration and hope to the people who have Cystic Fibrosis - not only in Australia but thoughout the world. This book is unique in every way and needs to be there in every library. I would recommend it to everyone because it is a chronicle of hope! It will touch your soul and make you feel a deep connection with those who are fighting against all odds and winning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walter proofs that CF isn't holding him back on anything!, February 23, 2010
This review is from: Coughing the Distance: Paris to Istanbul with Cystic Fibrosis (Volume 2) (Paperback)
After you have read Coughing the Distance you think;
What an incredible journey Walter made dispite of CF.
This will encourage everyone with this dissage.
Walter isn't stating that CF is just a minor thing, no it controls his life.
But he won't let CF controle his joy and happiness!
And thats why he is doing all the stuff everybody once wants to do.
Travel the world!

Read this wonderfull book and share the compelling story of an everyday fight against CF,
on bikes, steep hills, and warm friendships along the way. Go on Walter!
