Embryonic Westerberg?,
By Jeff Glass (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Could You Please and Thank You (Audio CD)
I bought this because Pete Searcy fronted Squirrel Bait, a great mid-80-'s band that at the time was compared to Husker Du and The Replacements. In fact, at the time, Searcy was called the best voice in rock other than Paul Westerberg (! ). Searcy's current sound is slick power pop, not unlike the Goo Goo Dools or Tal Bachman. This isn't all bad--sometimes the hooks are there and the songs work (see "Furniture," "Hateful," and "Ceiling Stars"). Overall, enough good songs to make it worth buying. One major improvement would be for Pete to rasp out his voice a little, like in the old days. The ultra-polished vocal sound he goes for here detracts from the songs, which at their best really are like Westerberg, and deserve a more gritty, soulful treatment.

What Great Music Should Be,
By Shelia Taylor (Clover, South Carolina USA) - See all my reviews

Peter's debut for Time Bomb Records, is the essence of what great music is all about. Beautiful and poetic...music that is straight from the heart and soul. Peter's haunting and wonderful voice and guitar talents only leave you wanting more and make you put the album on repeat for days on end.

I just saw Peter live last night and he was awesome! He was opening for Blessid Union of Souls and I enjoyed him as much as the headliners. His songs are filled with poetry and soul and he's also a really nice guy. (talked to him after the show) I have been listening to the cd almost constantly since i bought it last night. I especially enjoy the tracks Invent, Broken, and Could You Please and Thank You.

Return of a great songwriter,
By A Customer
This review is from: Could You Please and Thank You (Audio CD)
Being from Louisville, Peter's hometown, I have had the good fortune to see him in three of his four projects-Big Wheel, Starbilly, and his current solo act. He is an amazing songwriter with an incredible voice. I bought the CD last night at the release party and have been listening non-stop all morning. "Losing Light Fast", the very catchy first single is a beautiful apology, "Bored" is an equally catchy and somewhat bitter I-told-you-so, but my favorite song has to be "Invent" about making something out of a relationship. His voice is what drew me to Big Wheel, but it's the songwriting that will keep me hooked and following his career wherever he goes.

Overlooked, Unfortunately,
This review is from: Could You Please and Thank You (Audio CD)
As a newcomer to his music, I feel his voice is a little sharp for my taste... but the lyrics are certainly his strength, and the musicianship and verve of his music really stands out. This CD has something of a "mid-80s rock" feel to it, (ie before the hair bands) which makes it kind of an oddity, considering when it was released. But give it a chance, and I think you'll keep it in rotation.

What an awesome artist. His voice just blows me away. The sound gets my adrenaline going, and I would recommend this album to anyone who likes music. The smooth sound is both relaxing, but makes you wanna get up and move. I am a top swimmer in the sate of Colorado, and I listen to him before every race. It's so cool to hear, gets the blood flowin'. But it if you're interested at all.

I saw Peter Searcy open for Paul Kelly in Detroit. This unassuming young man got on stage with only his guitar and proceeded to blow me away. By the end of the evening, I owned all (three) of his albums. Powerful music, inventive and eloquent lyrics, recommend to all!

This is great music that more people should be listening to. Peter Searcy is an awesome songwriter who reflects on life today. My top song picks: Furniture, Ceiling Stars, and Bored.

Throw this away, buy Squirrel Bait instead,
By Paul M. Loughman (Delray Beach, FL USA) - See all my reviews

Well, I've already written a very detailed review here about how awful it was for me to hear how lame Mr. Searcy has become in the 15 years since he was the brilliant singer of the brilliant band Squirrel Bait, but apparently Amazon deemed it too harsh and decided not to print it. So rather than indulge in such derision again, let me just say...if this CD made you as ill as it made me, go buy either of the 2 CD's put out by the band Squirrel Bait, and you'll realize that Peter Searcy reached his peak at the age of 15, and it's been downhill from there. SQUIRREL BAIT!
