Book Description

The new subtitle of Volume 2, reflects both the emphasis of the new edition and the importance of these topics in chemical engineering. It contains new chapters on, 'Adsorption', 'ion exchange', 'Chromatographic separations' and 'Membrane separations'. This volume is concerned with the physical nature of the processes that take place in industrial units, and in particular, with the factors that influence the rate of transfer of material. Particle technology which relates to the basic properties of systems of particles and their preparation by comminution, is covered in Chapters 1 and 2. Subsequent chapters deal with the interaction between fluids and particles under varying conditions. Fluid-solids separation processes are discussed in the chapters on, 'Sedimentation', 'Filtration', 'Gas Cleaning' and 'Centrifugal Separations'. The chapters on Leaching, Drying and Crystallisation are concerned with the mass transfer from solids; and Distillation, Gas Absorption and Liquid-Liquid Extraction on mass transfer in fluids. This volume, along with the rest of the series, will continue to be a valuable text, both for those teaching and studying chemical engineering and for scientists and engineers in industry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

L. J. Ford
Coulson and Richardson is probably the most widely used standard text for undergraduate students and a new edition is a noteworthy event... this has to represent very good value for money for 899 pages of well written text. Comparison with the 1st edition (revised) with which my own education commenced indicates that virtually every section has increased in size with a major expansion in the case of Fluidisation and Sedimentation reflecting the advance in knowledge in these areas and new sections on Adsorption, Ion Exchange, Chromatography and Membranes which have been specially written for this edition by J. M. Bowen and J. R. Conder of Swansea. They are to be commended for their contribution, that on Adsorption being particularly well written... The chapter on Fluidisation has clearly been recently revised and provides an excellent student text...Overall the volume has sustained the standard expected and the student is well served for the most part.

2.0 out of 5 stars Falling short comparing with Perry, September 2, 2001
By
I have been working i the chemical industry for 18 years. I have found 1 advantage for this book compared with "Perry's Chemicals ... handbook 6 edition", the price. I have benn reading some chapter very thoroughly, i was very dissapointed. Crystallisation, fluidisation, centrifugal separations. In every aspect Perry was better. I have breafly been reading and comparing some other chapters and the result is the same.
Coulson seems to me to be old, made by people that have not been out working in the factory the last 50 years. The text is also filled with information for filling the pages ( an american sicknes compared wit europe), to a higher degree.
