This is the first modern translation of the entire Acts of the Council of Chalcedon, the earliest Ecumenical Synod for which the entire acts are extant. It is a fantastic and fascinating read. Though, from an Orthodox perspective, the analysis provided by the translators is very Western (non-Patristic) (in the sense that they often attempt to use a Western (non-Patristic) worldview to tease out motivations and causes) the acts themselves are wonderful to read. This synod was an extremely important point in the history of the Church, given the first major schism resulted from it (the separation of the colloquially termed Oriental Orthodox Churches -Armenians, Copts, etc. - from the rest of the Church). I also found that, in reading the acts themselves many of the non-theological accusations leveled at Chalcedon by the non-Chalcedonians actually have no basis in fact (just one being that Dioscorus was not anathematized for heresy. The reality is that just as many signed the acts anathematizing him for heresy as not with just as many not appending the reason why to their signatures, arguing that there is just as good a reason to say that he was anathematized for heresy as any other argument). It is also fascinating the detail to which they went through the entire acts of the so-called Robber Council that precipitated this synod. Overall, a wonderful work that, I think, is of great importance.

This text is not for the popular reader. The text can be tedious but a fascinating insight into how these Bishops and the Imperial Government viewed the task at hand and how they spoke. The style is completely foreign to Church documents today. It is a vivid insight into the times of that period while the Roman world was still fairly well functioning.

This is excellent reference material on the Council of Chalcedon. It amazes me these documents are still in existence after 1500+ years! It points to the high level of culture and organization. Plus it provides a real look into how the Catholic Church thrashed out it teachings through a Council.

The Council of Chalcedon was a very important Council with consequences still with us today.
