The experience of childhood sexual abuse is a trauma that often continues to have an impact on survivors throughout their lives. The experience is prevalent in the histories of individuals who seek counselling for whatever reason. Because of the possible pervasive and long-term effects that stem from the abuse, it is important that all counsellors become adept at addressing the unique and complex needs of survivors.

The author identifies the significant healing processes - such as disclosing the abuse, reinterpreting it from an adult perspective, addressing issues related to the context of the abuse and making desired life changes - which are vital to achieve recovery. Each of these processes is discussed in conjunction wit

Editorial Reviews

Review

`There are a number of books which deal with the subject of childhood sexual abuse but few as readable and practical as this, which is a step-by-step guide to understanding the effects of childhood sexual abuse and helping survivors through the process of counselling from disclosure to resolution. The attraction of this book is in its clear organization and structure... One of the most valuable pieces of advice offered the reader is that "the development of self-awareness regarding one's attitudes and beliefs related to the issue of childhood sexual abuse is essential"... The strength of the book is in the way Draucker provides exercises and techniques to facilitate the work and case examples to illustrate the concepts... an invaluable book... it is essential reading for those working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse' - Child Abuse Review

`A useful handbook for anyone involved in working with survivors... a very readable yet academic book, well stocked with practical ideas and richly referenced' - Counselling, The Journal of the British Association for Counselling

`As a handbook for novice students willing to listen and learn about the vast complexities of this subject this book will be a useful first step... I can certainly enviSAGE the `illustrative counselling interventions' which the author skilfully incorporates throughout each chapter as being a useful device for initially imparting valuable therapeutic skills' - Fighting Back

`The book identifies the key healing processes and Draucker includes clear explanations of the processes involved in counselling with specific practical suggestions and relevant case studies. She covers a range of different childhood abuse experiences and identifies techniques relevant to both male and female survivors... provides a very good, practical guide to counsellors who are starting work with child sexual abuse survivors. It provides a clear overview of key issues and helpful therapeutic strategies' - Clinical Psychology Forum

`Draucker's book has a practical approach and is accessible to all disciplines. Her use of case examples and counsellor-client dialogue adds to its readability... the book is well structured, and provides practical and realistic advice to counsellors on how to deal with this highly emotive and controversial subject' - Criminal Behaviour and Mental Health

`This is an excellent book, well-written and organized; it provides counsellors with clear therapeutic guidelines and case illustrations and is based on sound research findings. I thoroughly recommend it as a source book for anybody involved in counselling survivors of childhood sexual abuse' - International Review of Psychiatry

`A valuable addition to the library of all professional counselors... A unique aspect of this book is a section on group counseling as a treatment modality for survivors which includes a review of goals of group counseling, types of groups and common group issues... the information presented is specific, clear and practical. It is arranged in a logical, coherent manner which adds to its intellectual attractiveness. An ample bibliography and index likewise enhance its value to the reader' - Family Violence & Sexual Assault Bulletin

`This book is an accessible, practical guide to helping childhood sexual abuse victims through the healing process... a very useful tool for any professional dealing with the counseling and/or treatment of sexually abused clients' - Florida Journal of Public Health

I found this books to be really excellent. It was not a general,...overview. It covered all known symptoms found in survivors, showing how these theories were based on hard statistics. It was amazing to see how far-reaching the effects are of child-abuse. Although written for professional councellors, it could be read by lay councellors and patients alike. I would really recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the effects of child abuse and how to help them.
