4.0 out of 5 stars The Counselors: Conversations With 18 Courageous Women...
I found The Counselors to be an approachable and personal vehicle for learning about 18 (potentially intimidating) women within a single volume. I particularly like it because of its conversational style. I have read biographies of some of the women included in this book (and enjoyed them). 1.0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of useless information
This is probably one of the worst books I've had the misfortune to peruse in quite some time. It is not particularly well written, and the stories presented are unbelievably sanguine. It sounds as though the author simply asked the women what they wanted in the book and wrote it as a panacea to them; there is no critical eye. Obviously, the author is not a trained...

This review is from: The Counselors: Conversations With 18 Courageous Women Who Have Changed The World (Hardcover)
I found The Counselors to be an approachable and personal vehicle for learning about 18 (potentially intimidating) women within a single volume. I particularly like it because of its conversational style. I have read biographies of some of the women included in this book (and enjoyed them). I found that this book adds to the feminist discourse by presenting a new perspective that speaks to readers like myself and also to those who are just becoming interested in law, women's studies or government. I would recommend this to readers already privileged enough to be a part of an academic discussion of feminism and to less traditional audiences who are looking for a way to learn about women in law/government and perhaps be inspired to pursue a career in these or other fields that might appear intimidating.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real World, March 13, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Counselors: Conversations With 18 Courageous Women Who Have Changed The World (Hardcover)
I enjoyed reading about what some really prominent women have to say about their work and about other things that matter to them--The stories were entertaining, sometimes outrageous--I liked it as pop culture chatting and as history--Truth is stranger than fiction! Plus there were some things presented that I think I can use going forward.

I found this book to be inspirational. The author gives the reader insights to these truly courageous women that cannot be found elsewhere. This book would make a great gift to a recent college/grad school graduate or to anyone who realizes the importance of mentoring.

This review is from: The Counselors: Conversations With 18 Courageous Women Who Have Changed The World (Hardcover)
As a woman lawyer, I found the Counselors to be inspiring. It was wonderful to read about woman who faced many of the frustrations that I have faced in my career, but did not give up and continued to use their legal skills to help those around them. I thought their advice was particularly helpful. The book is easy to read and fascinating. I highly reccommend it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting Personal, April 8, 2002

Each chapter of 'The Counselors' provides an insightful discussion with a woman who has forged her way through a traditionally male field. The reader learns not only the woman's resume, but also her personal thoughts on her struggles, successes and failures. Vrato is a talented author and 'The Counselors' is extremely well-written. I would recommend this book not only to the established professional woman who can relate to the Counselors' stories, but also to young women just starting out in their careers as an inspiration for their professional lives ahead. This book is well worth the read and (in light of the topic and format) would make an excellent graduation gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mentoring is the Point, April 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Counselors: Conversations With 18 Courageous Women Who Have Changed The World (Hardcover)
The last reviewer missed the point. The author's book is not about politics or women's issues. It is a book about mentoring. The reader is supposed to imagine what would happen if you were having a cup of coffee with each of these women to ask them how each "made it." The book provides great access to these women and will be helpful to young women starting out, especially lawyers.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Profiles in Courage for women", April 6, 2002

This review is from: The Counselors: Conversations With 18 Courageous Women Who Have Changed The World (Hardcover)
The book portrays remarkable women in a very real and intimate way. The wisdom shared by these women is invaluable and the conversation format made it tangible to readers of all ages.

I feel the reader from Chicago who didn't like The Counselors didn't get the point of the book. The point is that the author asked the women interviewed what they wanted to tell others and put it in a book. It's not supposed to be new information and it's not supposed to be delivered with a critical eye.

I love that this book provides a definite female perspective for women readers while being something men can enjoy too. My boyfriend is a cable news [enjoyer]. He liked this book just for the way it presents events of the last 30 years in a way digestible for general readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, entertaining, and important, April 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Counselors: Conversations With 18 Courageous Women Who Have Changed The World (Hardcover)
This is a well-written and important work. One must consider how far women have come in a very short time, and how much further there is to go. The author uses a uniquely causual approach to speak to these women who are rarely shown in this light. It makes for a refreshing and worthwhile experience. Kudos to Ms. Vrato.
