4.0 out of 5 stars Adoralble!, June 14, 2007
This review is from: Count My Blessings, One Through Ten (Hardcover)
Count My Blessings is an adorable book that I enjoyed reading to my one-year old. It is written as a Thank You prayer and includes the full prayer at the back of the book so that you could easily use this prayer to teach your child to pray.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute little book, November 8, 2006

This review is from: Count My Blessings, One Through Ten (Hardcover)
Count My Blessings: One Through Ten is a cute little book filled with interesting pictures that are sure to hold your young child's attention. The author has penned a bedtime prayer and illustrated it with pictures to go along with the words.

1 -- bless my house
2 -- bless my parents
3 -- bless my friends

And on it goes through 10, with each item being a day-to-day thing that all children are familiar with.

I read the book out loud right away to my four-year-old daughter and my nineteen-month-old daughter and both were fascinated by the colorful pictures. My four-year-old knows how to count already, but she said that this is a good book to teach her sister how to count.

Armchair Interviews says: This is also a good bedtime story for young children, both boys and girls.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, October 26, 2011
This review is from: Count My Blessings, One Through Ten (Hardcover)
Bold blocks of color in frames give a primary feel to this counting book. Although attractive, it was not exactly what I expected from the reviews. I had expected more of a "I am thankful for..." or "Thank you for..." book. Instead, it is a numbered list of requests for God to bless various people, places, or things. Not bad -- just different than I expected.

The rhymes for each number are well done, except for one awkward line:
"Bless my stuffed animals -- to sleep, I will take."

Nice for little tots who need visual prompting for their prayers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes praying to an invisible God more tangible, October 5, 2006
This review is from: Count My Blessings, One Through Ten (Hardcover)
One of the zillion cool things about blogging is getting acquainted with some of the authors, who otherwise wouldn't know me if I stole their pens at a book signing.

I've had a warm correspondence with Salina Yoon, who creates novelty books -- unusual and eye-catching board books, often with lots shimmer and glitter for happy little hands. Both her Easter and Hanukkah books earned high marks on this site.

She's now aimed her colorful magic to everyday blessings in a counting book. A teddy bear says his nightly prayers for his family and favorite toys: one house, two parents, three friends, etc.:

Bless my friends both old and new.
Bless my pets, so dear to me too.

The pictures are awash in vivid primary colors, with lots of fun purples especially, but I miss all the shiny stuff. That's okay, it's simple and sweet and makes something abstract -- praying to an invisible deity -- concrete by counting things that are real to the child.
