Fleming's latest title quickly calls young readers to attention. This introduction to the numbers one to 10--plus 20, 30, 40 and 50--also serves as a lively romp through the wild kingdom. Each spread clearly labels a numeral and animal, and depicts the appropriate number of creatures exhibiting characteristic behavior. An exclamatory phrase then helps to identify the animals' activity. For instance, eight vibrant toucans flock toward one pink berry while the text reads "Share, toucans!" Two pages sporting the phrase "Count again!" and "Count again, please" appear near the end of the book and act as rapid reinforcers. The bold, nearly neon illustrations feature Fleming's inventive dyed-pulp painting technique--the result is a collage that crackles with life. Fuchsias and oranges, teals and purples roll over the pages blending into each other in Fleming's beautiful couched paper with handcut-stencil illustrations. Her explosions of color and motion are captivating and energizing. When the text says, ``Wiggle, worms!,'' readers can see them slithering right off the page. Double-page spreads feature numbers from 1 to 10, as well as 20, 30, 40, and 50. Each includes its numeral and word in English, slashes representing its quantity, and countable creatures along with a brief salutation or command, such as ``Line up, lizards!'' or ``Stretch, giraffes!'' Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in Toledo,Ohio, where I live still. I am a midwestern girl.

Q: What is your earliest memory of writing/drawing?
A: It seems like I was always writing and drawing. I wanted to share my ideas from the beginning. A bit bossy am I.

Q: What inspired you to write/illustrate your first book?
A: I started collecting picture books in art school. I was crazy about the whole picture book format. I realized, as I was sharing books with my daughter, that making books is what I needed to do.

Q: What are your hobbies and interests besides reading and books?
A: I work in clay, create art from tin cans, and make art dolls. Right now I am working on combining all three media. I also dye and paint fabric for the dolls.
Planting flowers and painting the outside of my house and studio is what I am busy doing right now.

Q: What one or two words of advice would you give for young authors/illustrators?
A: Experiment with different styles and media.

Fleming has designed and written a beautiful book. The illustrations are just beautiful and rendered wonderfully (not as abstract as some of her other titles). The unusual animal choices make for fun reading: toucans, gnus, worms--my 9-month-old loves it. I look forward to each of Fleming's titles--when you have to reread a book umpteen times, her artwork is a joy to view again and again; when your little one is squealing in delight at each page and you are enjoying what you are reading, then you both are sharing a wonderful book and moment together. And, therefore, I highly recommend this gorgeous book.

This book is bright, vivid, eye-catching, and fun. Our 20-month old is very interested in counting and animals so this book perfectly fits both categories. This is the book that she wants us to read to her, oh, about 20 times a day. She has now begun to "read" it to herself and her stuffed animals throughout the day. We highly recommend this book for younger children (because of the bright and interesting illustrations) as well as older ones (the simplicity of the illustrations makes it easy to actually count the animals pictured).

This book is a great way to teach even the very young about counting and number concepts! I bought this book for my daughter when she was 5 months old. Even then she was drawn to the very colorful and engaging illustrations. Now at 21 months old my daughter likes to count along with us as we read the book to her. I have also used this book in a first grade classroom. It's a great independent reading book for kids at that age, and as a bonus it helps them with math concepts.
