an excellent film version of a massive book,

This review is from: The Count of Monte Cristo 1975 (Der Graf von Monte Christo) [Import - All Regions] (DVD)
I was quite surprised at how faithful this film is to the book: the Count is this version is very human and evolves through the course of the story. While many details are left out because of time limits, it is wonderfully non-Hollywood, especially the anti-climactic ending. Chamberlain does an excellent job as the Count, who moves from naivete to a bitter search for vengence to a need for redemption, all believably. Tony Curtis is a bit weak, though the other conspiratorial adversaries are very good, as is the stunning Mercedes.
Warmly recommended.

I have always enjoyed this version with Richard Chamberlain's remarkable renditon of the part of the Count. The rest the well known cast do a fine job as well being instrumental in conveying either good or evil. The costumes are quite good along with the music in setting the feel of the period. If you enjoy this you may want to catch the latest version with James Caviezel since it is different enough to make it worth seeing. I happen to like both versions. Good quality DVD with good replayability. If you enjoyed this catch "The Man in the Iron Mask" and "The Thorn Birds". - C. Luster

Outstanding movie; Richard Chamberlain is at his best; follows the book but with greater attention to detail; the American accents are somewhat harsh at times but forgiveable in the overall

Richard Chamberlain was the king of the mini series. As the Count of Monte Cristo, he does not disappoint. A beautifully photographed film with a great cast. Tony Curtis is a little odd in his role as villian but he's still fun to watch. The dvd is perfect even though it's an import.

The Best English-language Adaptation of the Classic Novel,
By
This review is from: The Count of Monte Cristo 1975 (Der Graf von Monte Christo) [Import - All Regions] (DVD)
The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics) is one of the best-selling and best-loved books of the world. Alexandre Dumas, pere wrote the novel en francais, and I can't think of another non-English book that has been turned into ten film versions (half of them in English), unless it is Dumas' equally famous The Three Musketeers.
The book is thrilling and lavish, with themes of hope and despair, vengeance and mercy, nobility and justice and revenge. It is also about 1,000 pages long. Trying to condense the varied and equally delicious plot lines into one feature length film is all but futile, but this version comes closest to satisfyingly staying true to the spirit of the famous tale of Edmund Dantes. (The '99 French version with Gerard Depardieu is a mini-series lasting seven hours.) Richard Chamberlain makes the most dashing Count in memory. (James Caviezel seems the merest school-boy in comparison.) Donald Pleasance is properly slimy and greedy as Danglars. Louis Jourdan makes a pompous (and French!) De Villefort. Kate Nelligan is luminous and desirable as Mercedes. Tony Curtis' Bronx accent is a little distracting as Fernand Mondego, but not enough to not recommend this version. It would be worth seeing if only to watch Richard Chamberlain walk through Danglars' double-doors, removing his cape with a flourish. Also of note compared to the 2002 Caviezel version - this one, although truncating some book through necessity, at least sticks to the book for the parts that ARE presented. The ending is true to the book and is supposed to be bittersweet. Why does Hollywood insist on a Hollywood ending?

The theme of this master novel is the futility of revenge?
The French system of laws in the early 19th century was in bad enough to have inspired several novel: Les Miserables. I this case the escape of Edmond Dantes to become the rich count of Monte Cristo is the folly of a rich man's revenge which instead of happiness plunges him into grief at the loss of his one true love once again.

Very poor import. Probably cost 10 cents to make. I had to ask
for another cd as the one sent kept breaking up half way through. The CD did follow the Story line and it didn't take three hours to watch it. Would not recommend buying it.

This video is one that I had wanted for a long time. Despite the fact that the jacket says there is dialog in German, there was not. The story is quite adventurous, but has a sadly satisfying denouement. I highly recommend it.

The Count of Monte-Cristo (Der Graf von Monte Christo)
Richard Chamberlain's version, in my opinion, is the best version. And this collector's item is out of print in most places. So, it would be wise to get it through [...] while you can. A great story of a man falsely accused of being a traitor, imprisoned for many years in an island prison. But then, after meeting a priest inside the prison and being tutored by him, and after learning of those who betrayed him, he escapes and goes hunting for the treasure on the map that the priest gives him before he dies in the prison. After finding the treasure, and using the money for good, he then uses the money to buy information to exact revenge on those who caused his grief over the many years. How he does this is great and poetic justice. Great acting, sword play, action, and entertainment. A collector's item. |
