Book Description

There are things to count all around you. If you look. And think. And see. Tana Hoban does -- and so will the youngest reader who accompanies her through this book. Exciting photographs -- reinforce by the number as word, as numeral, and as model set -- show you how to count what you see, and make what you see count.

4.0 out of 5 stars A teaching tool for counting from 1-15, 20,30,40...100., October 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Count and See (Hardcover)
I liked this book for various reasons. First, I thought it was neat for representing numbers through numerals, words, and dots. It also incorporated street scenes and common objects for the reader to see a certain number of objects in an everyday situation. I also liked how the cover and some pictures showed children of different races together. The only thing negative comment I have is that the pictures are black and white and not as attractive as more current books. I think the book is appropriate and a great way to practice counting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Count and See Creates Number Lovers!, February 11, 2011

Yeah, totally rocks. The previous reviewers described this book to a "T". Just wanted to add that the photos have a urban feel, and some photos take me right down memory lane...there's nothing like jacks and old-school bottlecaps. Makes counting enjoyable, and my non-counter was entranced by the dots, which lend a totally different counting aspect when compared with items/people presented in the photos for counting purposes. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great for learning to identify numbers!, June 13, 2010
By
This review is from: Count and See (Hardcover)
This is one of the best books I have ever had in my classroom. It is great for young learners to identify numerals, to see the number word, and to match this with an appropriate photograph (i.e. 1 fire hydrant). Going from numbers 1-15, tens from 20-50, and then ending with 100, this is a comprehensive learning-to-count guide.

Interestingly enough, the photographs are black and white, which allows a continuity in imagery that you rarely see in contemporary picture books. This is a classically vintage counting book, with the left side of the page being black and the number, the number word, and the appropriate number of dots (i.e. 8 dots for the number eight) all in white. The right hand side has a black and white photograph to tell the story of what 8 looks like in real life. For example, 8 windows on the side of a house.

Tana Hoban does extraordinary work by keeping picture books simple and elegant, and "Count and See" is no exception.
