Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- A social studies book in counting-book format that shows readers how to count from one to ten in Hebrew. Its primary purpose, however, is to teach about the land, agricultural and manufactured products, history, holidays, symbols, fauna, and peoples of Israel. Children will be more apt to remember this information because of the mnemonic device of numbers, e.g., the number three ( shah-losh ) is illustrated by Jerusalem's importance to three religions. All are quite logical. A pronunciation guide (Hebrew letters and transliteration) for numbers one through ten appears on the last page. Hanson's bright watercolor borders and realistic illustrations are appealing. No other book on Israel for this age level is equal to this one. It most resembles a World Book Encyclopedia article adapted for lower elementary grades. --Marcia Posner, Federation of New York and the Jewish Book Council, New York City
