Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Each of these concept books has colorful spreads of nonthreatening creatures in a prehistoric environment. Alphasaurus features 26 alliterative sentences that introduce dinos from A to Z. For example, "I is for Iguanodon,/impolitely ignoring an inchworm." Colorasaurus depicts the world of the dinosaurs with an emphasis on their environment, such as red lava, an orange sun, black tar, and the yellow sand of the dunes. Countasaurus leads youngsters as they count from 1 to 10 with the help of several dinosaur models. In Shapeasaurus, three very brightly colored Tyrannosauruses hatch from oval eggs. Over the next pages, these youngsters explore their world, from the circular sun to the dangerous crescent claws of a hunting Velociraptor. Endearing as the illustrations are, readers won't forget how dangerous these lizards were when the next page reveals the Tyrannosauruses' triangular teeth gnawing on bones. The book comes full circle as the three are fully grown waiting for their eggs to hatch. Dino fans will be delighted with this series.-Laura Butler, Mount Laurel Library, NJα(c) Copyright 2011. There's a lot to enjoy in Countasaurus, but also a lot that can be problematic for young counters. This sturdy board book counts from one to ten and then jumps to fifty at the end as young readers are invited to "look out for Tyrannosaurus Rex's 50 terrible teeth!" The text is short and to the point, without a rhyme in sight. There's very little read aloud flow and I wish the author would have found a way to include pronunciations! The author includes a nice variety of dinosaurs from Pterodactyl to Velociraptors to Maiasaura. The dinosaurs are pretty cartoonish and are done in a color scheme that I found rather odd and unremarkable. The text tells us that Icthyosaurus swims through the water with 5 flippy fins, and we see that five of his fins are spotted. What about the tail fins? Do they not count? Stegosaurus has a tail with 4 fierce spikes, however I think most kids will be tempted to also count his spines.

The book is sturdy and will no doubt please very young dinosaur fans. There are so many good counting books out there though, that I would encourage parents to look elsewhere for a book with distinctive graphics, well defined quantities, and also one that includes the number word along with the numeral. I think that even dinosaur fans will soon grow tired of the dinosaurs portrayed here and go looking for a dinosaur book with far more energy.

Wow! This book not only covers the basics of counting, but children will also enjoy it for years due to the fun portrayal of real dinosaurs (with factual information about each dinosaur). This book believes in the intelligence of the children for whom it is written, not "dumbing down" for them, but sill age-appropriate and completely entertaining. A great book...and part of a perfect series for children learning counting, colors, shapes, and the alphabet.
