a great surprise,
By anna (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Countdown: 1992-1983 (Audio CD)
I bought this CD (not here) without ever hearing anything off it. I had only heard one song by Pulp--"Like a Friend", on the Great Expectations soundtrack--before, but I loved that one so much and liked the price, considering it's 2 CDs, so I trusted my instincts and I'm so glad I did. I love this music; Pulp definitely has a unique sound, and Jarvis Cocker writes some really great lyrics. This is an all-in-all great CD set!

Simply the best,

This is definetely one of the best ever. Music has gone downhill since the departure of the beatles, but pulp promise an amazing alternative. This album has a mixture of sort of slow tracks like 97 lovers, but also have amazing beat rhymes like countdown extended version. Although my favorite is don't you want me anymore? The whole album will definately have at least 3 or 4 that you like a lot, the rest will you will just like!

"...It's not strange to me",

This review is from: Countdown: 1992-1983 (Audio CD)
This album is meant to be discovered song by song, not by the entirety of the album (which is why I gave it only four stars). A lot fantastic songs are on here: "Countdown", "Death Goes To The Disco", "My Legendary Girlfriend" (which features vocals by Barry White... just kidding), "She's Dead", "I Want You", "Being Followed Home", "They Suffocate At Night", "The Dogs Are Everywhere", "97 Lovers" (one of the worst and best songs ever made), "Little Girl", "My Lighthouse" (the most beautiful song ever written), "Wishful Thinking", "Blue Girls", and the extended "Countdown". If you are new to Pulp's sound, you may want to start with "Different Class" or "His 'N' Hers", but it does take more than a few listens to GET Pulp, and to GET the eccentricities of this great band is a great feat.

How can you say that????,

How can you say that this is worse then difernt class??? People are so bent on the trediness of " difrent class " that they forget that there are other Pulp CD's out there. This CD shines as a good example of all the work that pulp does, and not just the famous stuff

a little bit strange ..,

This review is from: Countdown: 1992-1983 (Audio CD)
I have their newer album 'Different Class' , but I was totally unprepared for this one. For me personally, their music is a little bit strange, and their lyric is... odd. I dunno, maybe it's because their 'British' eccentricity. All in all, I like this double album, especially 'countdown'.

back when Pulp had fins instead of feet,

At times, it's like looking back at your family tree and discovering that you are descendant from some sort of lizard-man than monkeys, but keep perspective by repeating: "Different Class. Different Class. Different Class." to yourself. Seriously, this comp has some real gems . . . and some stones that were probably better not turned over. Still, with songs like "Death Goes To The Disco", "Dogs Are Everywhere", "Countdown", and "My Lighthouse", you can see that greatness was always in Pulp, it only had to be refined and brought to the surface. Just wait for 30 minutes after eating before you listen.

Intoduction to Sheffields' Sleaziest,
By A Customer
This review is from: Countdown: 1992-1983 (Audio CD)
This record is a great introduction to the dark, and often damp world of pre-fame pulp. The production and general musicianship is nothing to be marvelled at, but the songs themselves are work of true genius. Jarvis's twisted and often tortured lyrics give an often sinister twist to many of the songs. A definate recommendation on all fronts - Look out for track four on the second CD, which is obviously dedicated to Claire Freeman. Live on brothers and sisters.
