Editorial Reviews

Review

"'Countenance' is such a comforting and heart-warming tale, and readers will fall in love with the novel's leading ladies, Nealey and Sylvie, who really are strong and extraordinary women. The love between them is so palpable it all but brings this story to life.  Plenty of other surprising characters populate this novel's pages as well, some of them being more - or less - than they seem. While 'Countenance' is a relatively brief read, it contains a heavy helping of life lessons that will surely leave readers feeling emotionally sated." -Red City Review

"This is a book you don't want to put down until the end. It is full of surprises, suspense, secrets, ghosts, demons, and angels, From the first page, it holds your interest with a cast of characters you can't help but love. There are moments when you have tears in your eyes and others when you have a smile on your face." -Paranormal Romance Guild

The author does a great job of bringing the characters to life, making them sympathetic, creating a mysterious setting, and pulling the reader into the story.

For two days I've been living with the charming cast of characters in Joy Ross Davis' debut novel, "Countenance."

Although the Playhouse Inn only exist in the pages of this well-written novel, the author's lyrical writing style and storytelling ability had me roaming through the rooms (like an invisible guest) in this beautiful old bed and breakfast located in the hills of Tennessee.

From the beginning, I fell in love with Aunt Sylvie, an adored cookbook author and the proprietor of this one hundred year old home. We all need an "Aunt Sylvie" doting over us and whipping up her magic in the kitchen of this ancient inn where angels and ghosts live in harmony with the human inhabitants and guests.

That is until a troublemaker named Max shows up, but I'll say no more about this rascal as you will want to read this novel for yourself.

You will step into Nealey's shoes as she returns to the Playhouse Inn, hoping to recover - in both body and spirit - from a horrific event that claimed the lives of her husband, two young children, and her sister. You will be charmed and delighted by brothers, Worthy and Noble, as they go about doing what they do best. Who can forget the lovely Anna..and her two beautiful girls, Mae and Maggie, and the protective and constant companion, Lulu.

And then there's Benton, the ruggedly handsome and muscular custodian of the place. Aw, Benton...how you do restore my faith.

From the opening lines until the last page, you will be swept away with the strength of this story. Your spine will tingle.. you'll laugh, you'll cry. Then you'll want to get on the phone and book a stay at the Playhouse Inn. And if no one picks up the phone, then you must simply order this book and start reading now. You will not be disappointed.

~ Kathleen M. Rodgers, author of the Amazon bestselling novel, "The Final Salute."

Who would of thought I would like a book with ghosts, not usually my cup of tea, but this book is written with so much charm and the characters just came to life,<no pun intended>. I especially liked Aunt Sylvie and of course Benton, what a hunk. Aunt Sylvie's recipe for Double Crust Apple Butterscotch Pie was an added surprise at the end.I had a hard time putting the book down as I was reading it, could not wait to find out what really happened in Nealey's past. Humor, romance, suspense, this book had it all. Enjoyed the book thoroughly.

I have COUNTENANCE on my Kindle and now in print.

My opinion of the book remains the same -- "There are three elements that immediately attracted me to the story in Countenance and they weren't the wonderful, strong and wise angels! First, I love huge, sensible, kid-lovin' dogs like LuLu. Second, I can't stay away from old historic buildings, especially those that have been converted into modern uses like a the Play House Inn Bed and Breakfast! Third, I'm a goner for individualistic, soul healthy cooking and magic, secret ingredients like that used by Sylvie Wolcott when she cooks for her guests at the Play House Inn.

I could go to the Play House Inn and play house in the kitchen any time! I would let the dog have treats while we wandered from kitchen to attic, 'petting' the woodwork.

But, there is more than kitchen and pet attraction in the atmosphere around the Play House Inn. Aunt Sylvie offers shelter to her niece, Nealey, who has endured an horrific tragedy. Nealey's path back to living is surrounded by loving family on all spiritual planes, a huge, protective dog and those strong and wise guardian angels. The support team has its work cut out because evil has come to the Play House too. Evil that would destroy Nealey and all of the others to get to her. In an environment where tragedy has ruled for generations, why would evil not be the winner? It doesn't look good.

Read COUNTENANCE and learn what happens. You'll be glad you did!" Read it because there is a sequel coming and you want to be ready!

While I thoroughly enjoyed Countenance, this unique, multilayered story is not a quick or easy read. It draws the reader in after a couple of pages. Terrifying moments are chilling while the sweet scenes can bring a smile. Souls trapped in an old inn, strange comings and goings, and flashes into other times can confuse a reader who is easily distracted or not fully engaged in the story. Great bedtime reading here. The dialog was often a bit too formal, and I found the ending less than completely satisfying, but there are always a few stumbles in a first novel. I'm confident Ms. Davis's second installment in this series will neatly stitch together the loose threads left by an ending that seemed a bit rushed. If you like a story that makes you shiver and makes you think, you'll enjoy Countenance.

Countenance

I have just finished reading Countenance and found it to be an amazing, fascinating story. At first, I had a little difficulty "suspending my disbelief" insofar as the ghosts were concerned (maybe that just speaks to my brain that didn't develop much imagination beyond my own experience) but by the time I neared the end of the book, all the people had become very real to me. Now I'm awaiting a sequel! Joy Davis is a splendid writer and I'm glad to have discovered her book.
