4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad sequel
Although not a bad read, Counterstrike suffers from a common sequel ailment: living up to its predecessor. It dragged at times, and the length of time between the release of the first book and this one meant re-familiarizing myself with the characters. Overall, worth your time to keep up on the storyline, but nothing spectacular.

I was so disappointed when I read this book. I thought the first book was ok and was a good build-up into an awesome cross planet space war. Instead there were only a few half decent fights and the war seemed to end suddenly with little involvement from the main characters.

So the author maintains twenty different characters all with their own sub-plots and it didn't go anywhere.

I want fighting, tactics, adventure. Humans wandering across an alien land fighting a war they barely understand.

Ahhh there was so much potential there.. I'm really disappointed.

"Counterstrike: the last world war" is a good sequel to "The Last World War". The author weaves a deep and more complex story and delves more into some of the politics of whole combined plot of the two books. I found this book to be a little slow to get going, but one going had a nice and engaging pace. Over all a Good read.

Ward's second book of "The Last World War" series is very good. This is solid science fiction where there is a large amount of science, aliens and interstellar war. The story is well written and marches along to the not surprising but good ending.

This is the second book in the series that started with "The Last World War" Overall I can give it 4 stars as a well written military sci-fi book. It proposes a world war on another planet that spills over to Earth after a teleportation gate is invented. One of the two warring parties hopes to use earth as a raw materials depot to replace their depleted home planet. The book is written about how Earth Nations respond to this challenge; not only on the macro governmental level but how the average private in the field reacts.
The characters are well written and believable. The actions taken by all parties are believable. And more importantly to me, there is no single point of evil, merely the affect of decades of war on people. I think you will enjoy it.
Hopefully this series will continue. The aliens invented the gates for instantaneous military transport on their home planet, It just turned out to have an interstellar range and Earth was accidentally discovered. Therefore, if one planet could be found, There are millions more to find.
