2.0 out of 5 stars Sequel to DUCHESS, August 26, 2008
By
This review is from: Countess (Paperback)
COUNTESS is the sequel to DUCHESS, which was the entertainingly written story of Viola Corbett, a poor but lovely English shopgirl who loses her first love but achieves wealth and eventual happiness with a new love. DUCHESS was good based upon its formula: a strong, beautiful, but lower class woman who's determined to better herself and experiences a lot of sturm-n-drang, and romance, in the process.

COUNTESS takes up where DUCHESS left off, with Viola's marriage of affection to an Austrian Count who's always loved her. That marriage has now lasted several years and it's become one of deep love, which is great to see, but then the story moves on to Viola's children, particularly her son James-Carlo, Viola's son by her first love. Somehow, the children's stories are not even close to being as compelling as Viola's original story was. Triumphs over adversity in COUNTESS are not nearly so satisfactory as they were in DUCHESS.

I recommend DUCHESS for a good, entertaining beach read, but for me, it would have been better to leave Viola's story there. COUNTESS is a weak sequel that I could have done without.
