Biography

With their angst-filled hybrid of Van Morrison, the Band, and R.E.M., Counting Crows became an overnight sensation in 1994. Only a year earlier, the band was a group of unknown musicians, filling in for the absent Van Morrison at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony; they were introduced by an enthusiastic Robbie Robertson. Early in 1993, the band recorded their debut album, August and Everything After, with T-Bone Burnett. Counting Crows put in the gigging hours during the early days of the band, and it paid off. By the time they signed to Geffen in 1993, they had already built up a significant fanbase. Their debut, August and Everything After was released later the same year and became an unexpected multi-platinum hit, partly as a result of the successful single "Mr. Jones". Soon after, lead singer Adam Duritz found himself overwhelmed by the success, and had a nervous breakdown. Eventually out of the unhappiness came the second album, Recovering the Satellites (1996).
