Book Description

November 1, 2000
One long poem threaded with personal, evocative poetry constantly moving. A Zen journey. A journey of love. The Absence of Zen. Becoming Jewish. The Kaddish. Blessings. A very readable work of what was known before and what is known now. From "The world is a hard place":

We look at our empty hands
and feel shadows and shade,
sky drying where water has bee,
and are left with wind, know them
only by their absence. Water. Wind.
-- Melissa Bell review in VISIONS-International 2001

From the Publisher

Tham's new book _Counting_ is a poetry memoir, the equivalent of a personal epic at the beginning of the Twenty-First Century. Its reach is large, like Whitman's _America_. Filled with both Chinese and Jewish spirits, it overflows with humor, ideas, and stories. -- Shirley Lim Geok-lin.

This review is from: Counting (Mass Market Paperback)
"Counting" is the story of an examined life, filled with generosity and love. In a 100-page, multi-sectioned poem, Hilary Tham takes us across her amazing life's journey, beginning with her impoverished Chinese-Malaysian girlhood, through her marriage to an American Peace Corps worker, her conversion to his religion (Judaism), and her travels around the world. She gives us the rich particulars of her life, talking of parents, siblings, husband, daughters, the deaths of family and friends; yet her authorial "I" is all-encompassing, far too generous and thoughtful for self-pity or narrow self-regard. As with Emily Dickinson, Hilary Tham's business is "circumference"--comprehending and embracing the entire world through the eye of a poet. She sees the bad, but believes the good is stronger, and loves the world for its contradictions. The final section of the book, "Blessings," is perhaps the best, combining Tham's deep religious feelings with her wholehearted celebration of the things of this world. As the poet herself says, "Let us bless, not curse, Eve/for eating that apple. Let us bless Adam/for choosing Eve over Eternity."
