From Booklist

Ages 3^-6. When St. Nicholas visits the community of angel children known as the Country Angels bringing news that they've been chosen "to make the Christmas celebration for all of Heaven this year," the little angels begin to bake, decorate, and practice singing for the occasion. Amid all the bustle, no one has time for the three littlest angels to help, but St. Nicholas sees their disappointment and arranges for them to bring what the others have forgotten. The colorful illustrations, featuring rounded forms and harmonious hues, fill the double-page spreads with the bustle of Christmas preparations. Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

"Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. By the time he could hold a pencil, he knew what his life's work would be. His determination to create books for children led to a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California.
It drove him through the years of teaching, designing greeting cards and stage sets, and painting church murals until 1965, when he illustrated his first children's book, Sound, by Lisa Miller for Coward-McCann. Eventually, freed of other obligations, he plunged full time into both writing and illustrating children's books.
He names Fra Angelico and Giotto, Georges Rouault, and Ben Shahn as major influences on his work, but he soon found his own unique style. His particular way with color, line, detail, and design have earned him many of the most prestigious awards in his field, among them a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona, the Smithsonian Medal from the Smithsonian Institution, the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota for his ""singular attainment in children's literature,"" the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal for his ""continued distinguished contribution,"" and the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion. He was also the 1990 United States nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration.
Tomie dePaola has published almost 200 children's books in fifteen different countries. He remains one of the most popular creators of books for children, receiving more than 100,000 fan letters each year.
Tomie lives in an interesting house in New Hampshire with his four dogs. His studio is in a large renovated 200-year-old barn.
- He has been published for over 30 years.
- Over 5 million copies of his books have sold worldwide.
- His books have been published in over 15 different countries.
- He receives nearly 100,000 fan letters each year.

5.0 out of 5 stars the perfect message for a wonderful holiday, December 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Country Angel Christmas (Hardcover)
Tomie dePaola's County Angel Christmas helps explain to children what the season is all about. In his wonderful style of writing and inticing pictures children see how the little angles want to help make Christmas special but no one will let them. Ari, Kira and Pip are so anxious to help yet the older angels are so busy making everything perfect they will not allow the small ones to help. St. Nicholas had the greatest idea for them and it reminds all who read the book the simple, pure message of Christmas.

1.0 out of 5 stars Negative vibe, no real story, poor ending., March 17, 2011
Santa visiting a community of child angels in heaven is, as a previous reviewer said, "unsettling." (Are these all dead children? All alone? No families? Just each other. Like the Island of Lost Toys. Only children.)

The three littlest angels want to help prepare for a Christmas festivity, but none of the other angel-children will let them join in and be part of the community's efforts. They are shoo-ed away at every turn, one page after another. Very negative. And rather mean of the older angel-children to exclude the little ones. So much for a heavenly attitude.

At the end of the book, the three little angels pull the Star of Bethlehem across the sky. But this star shines by the power of God, not because of three little angels. It doesn't make sense. I would have liked to see the older angel-children repent and be sorry that they excluded the three little ones. There is no moral.

You might want to check this one out of the library before purchasing, in case you, too, feel that it is creepy. And kind of pointless.

3.0 out of 5 stars Child angels a bit unsettling..., January 9, 2010
By
A couple nights before Christmas, St. Nicholas asks the country angels (all kids with angel wings) to be in charge of "...the Christmas celebration for all of Heaven this year!"

No pressure. The last two years, the Archangels and the Heavenly Choir were in charge!

But there's no room for the three littlest angels, Ari, Pip, and Kira, to help.
"You'll make a mess." "You're too young to do anything." "You'll only tangle it up."

But St. Nicholas finds a special duty for them that ends up saving the celebration!

This story, full of child angels, was a bit unsettling for a "feel good" book. Maybe I'm so used to Santa being with elves instead of angels! Nice illustrations, but more jarring than I expected.

If you are planning on mailing this book, it is large. The dimensions say 10.5 x 10.5 in, so it is very square.
