4.0 out of 5 stars Country boyz need love too. You better believe it!
When I first heard 'I'll take her' at soulmanmusic.com, I knew this record was gonna make me homesick(much love to Mississippi). I was not wrong. Folks from the burbs and the hood may be put off by this simple, down-to-earth, devoid of hip-hop hype, from the heart effort presented by C.R. 3.0 out of 5 stars Calvin Richardson - Country Boy (Universal, 1999)
If I heard this album back when it came out, I wouldn't have been too impressed. Cuts like "I'll Take Her" (featuring K-Ci) and "Vibe" are hot but other songs fall victim to average songwriting and overbearing vocals. Yes, Calvin can sing but he doesn't have to try so hard. His second album, 2:35 PM, is a vast improvement so I say go pick up that one...

From beginning to end, he presents a working class soulfullness that fills a void left by unsung soul legends like Tyrone Davis, Johnnie Taylor, and of course, Bobby Womack. He's not as vocally spectacular as Joe or Brian McKnight, but the music complements his voice(with its deliberately Southern accented phrasing) to its fullest effect. Its a shame that records like this largely go unnoticed by people who claim to be fans of Soul/R&B, but I'm glad I noticed it! So if you like your Soul with a southern-fried with a southern vibe, give this a listen. Fav tunes: 1. I'll take her, 2. Trust me so much, 4. Never knew love, 9. Close my eyes, 12. Country Boy

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST SOUL ALBUMS, January 16, 2004

THIS BROTHA HAS SO MUCH TALENT. FIRST, I BOUGHT HIS SECOND ALBUM, 2:35 P.M (I LOVE THAT ALBUM). THEN, I WENT TO THIS SITE TO WRITE A REVIEW AND DISCOVERED THAT HE RELEASED AN ALBUM BEFORE THAT ONE. ONCE I LISTENED TO THIS ALBUM, I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT TOO. MY FAVORITE SONGS ARE "HALF THE TIME," "TRUE LOVE," "VIBE," "DISRESPECTFUL GHETTO," "TRUST ME SO MUCH," "LOVIN YOU," "CLOSE MY EYES" ...BASICALLY, I NAMED THE WHOLE ALBUM SO, ITS A MUST HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO LOVES SOULFUL MUSIC. I LIKE ALL OF THE SONGS ALOT BUT THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT REALLY GOT MY ATTENTION WHEN I FIRST HEARD THEM. I PLAYED THIS CD FOR A FEW PEOPLE AND THEY REALLY LIKED IT TOO.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different Style, But Fresh, January 14, 2004
By
Tina (Dayton, OH) - See all my reviews

When I first heard his song titled "Vibe", I loved it!! The only reason I know of Calvin Richardson is because he was being interviewed on a television program and he sung one of his songs. I think his music is a mixture of jazz and blues, but it is a fresh style which is unique. That is when I purchased his album titled "Country Boy". I played his album for my friend and she loved it also. I just wish they would play his album on the radio so that he could get exposure. He is very talented and should go far. It is refreshing to have a different style and different type of flavor!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me??, July 19, 2003
By
This review is from: Country Boy (Audio CD)
This takes me back to when real music was on the radio!! This brother can flat out sing! Why do people sleep on real singing and keep buying the "status quo" artists of the moment, from what they hear on the radio? The lack of radio play has hindered this brothers career. Hit up his next CD when it comes out... it will be a must have!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Most under-rated singer out there!, January 7, 2006
This review is from: Country Boy (Audio CD)
Calvin Richardson is hands down one of the best singers out there! This CD is just a testament to that. If you are looking for a smooth album from start to finish then look no further. Every song on this album will have you pressing repeat! If I had to pick 3 songs on here, however, I would pick: Vibe, Close my eyes, Nightmare.

If you are a true R&B fan then this is a must have for the collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars R & B at it's best, August 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Country Boy (Audio CD)
This album would be a great edition to anyones CD collection. It has kind of an old school feel to it, but that is the kind of music that I enjoy, and most of my family as well, young and old alike.
If you are a fan of KC and JO JO or groups like Silk and Dru Hill I really think that you would enjoy Calvin's music.I recommend listening to I'll Take Her, and True Love. Those two songs alone should sell the whole album.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...yall have no clue what yall are missin out on..., January 26, 2002
This review is from: Country Boy (Audio CD)
..."ray-dee-oh-suckers never play me" - chuck d.

a very appropriate quote for this release...

this is perhaps one of the best adult (meanin 'grown' - not meanin 'gutter') r&b album debuts by any male vocalist. universal oughta be ashamed of themselves for not pushin this the way it shoulda been...
lissenin to this gave me flashbacks of bobby womack and stevie wonder; this is a very well-crafted album...no studio pyrotechnics: jus a show-case for quality soul music...this is jus that somethin-real; somethin which yall all really need anyway. stop missin out....

4.0 out of 5 stars A little old school soul!, September 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Country Boy (Audio CD)
Bringing back the old soulful grooves just like the Rude Boys did with their first album. Just listen to "Vibe" and the great remake of "Trust Me So Much".

If you liked the first albums from Rude Boys and Men At Large, then this is a must buy!
