This review is from: Country Fried Soul: Adventures in Dirty South Hip-Hop (Paperback)
I am a native Texan who has been immersed in the Dirty South's hip hop culture since my humble beginnings. Rap music is still very much the language of the oppressed, and I feel that it is important for the voices that resound below the Mason Dixon line to finally be heard. At this point, WE ARE ALL screaming YEAH!!! Tamara Palmer's first book is insightful. Her interviews are on point and her language is highly decorated. Overall, it is a nice and easy read. I highly recommend it to everyone from lovers of hip hop to haters of southern rap, because it shows the beauty and brilliance of a few southern artists who are serious about their music, their money, and their message. I am positive that soon there will be many more books on southern hip hop and this is definitely a GOOD start. I must admit, I hate the book's cover because it does not represent the south and looks totally West Coast. Nevertheless, once you turn the page you will surely be taken down yonder... and you may not ever want to come back :)
