Country Living design books are normally nicely done. A departure from that, this one has some issues. The text is fairly well-written. The images are nice, even if many of them have appeared in previous CL books. But the book is riddled with mistakes, typos, horrible and obvious photoshopping, deleted sentences, partial sentences and mismatched photo/caption pairs. There is one whole section which doesn't seem to match the photos at all. It's a pretty book with fun photos, and if this is your style, like it is mine, it's nice eye candy. But don't expect any new insight into design. Maybe you're a book editor in training and want some practice?

The pictures of vintage inspired interiors are nice, but the book definitely panders to readers of Country Living magazine (the publishers of the book). The paragraphs accompanying each photo are written at a 4th grade reading level, explaining to readers what a "collection" is, and how to go about making a "collection" to display in your "retro" kitchen. Ugh.

I found some great ideas for making a new home look older in this book. If you are a dedicated Country Living reader (like me) perhaps they won't be "new" to you, but it is a good resource to be able to find them all in one place. When we downsize, we're going to have to give up our gracious old home and I want to be able to add charm to wherever we end up. This is an excellent collection of tips to help age a home instantly - even a brand new condo.

I got this book thinking that it would contain ideas of how to actually paint or create an antique look with new furniture, and ideas of how to decorate a new home with touches of antiques or antique replicas. What I got was a book with pictures of decorated rooms with antique items. The book was not what I expected. I didn't find any decorating ideas in the book that were helpful to me.

I love the cover. But that's probably the best part. Besides the fact that it was printed in CHINA (a definite negative), Some of the pictures seem very familiar; seen in past magazines/books. Not too much new here... and many of the pictures were used at least twice on different pages of the book.

Of the 800 or so books I own on the subject of period architecture and design, this is in the bottom 10%. There are so many better books out there ... Russell Versaci's NEW OLD HOUSE and others are superb.

A newbie to rustic charm & a new home to decorate will benefit by this book! Loads of wonderful photos that show period rooms, farmhouse transformations, collection display ideas, etc., etc. Good info on caring for hooked rugs, quilts, hardwood floors, etc., and definitions of fiestaware, floor cloths, wrought iron, doorknobs, ironstone & more. Not a lot of new ideas for a seasoned old home owner or long time collector, but great photos that are fun to look at!

As a Country Living reader with a well-above 4th grade education [sorry to disappoint you, Kevin], I have to say this is a lovely book with some really fine ideas; however, in the vernacular, other than that, it sucks. It does not give the slightest HINT at how to accomplish the wonderful, antique-like finishes. If you are looking for yet another coffee table book, this one is for you. If you want some actual guidance in creating the look, go elsewhere.
