Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Northrop, the writer of the longtime column in Country Living magazine known as "Simple Country Pleasures," grew up on a farm in North Carolina. In this tribute to country life, she devotes short yet descriptive chapters to the people and things that comprise so many of her memories and from which she derived so much pleasure. In addition to recounting seasonal occurrences like holiday cooking, spring cleaning, and summertime activities, the author writes at length about her pets and other animals. Her upbeat tone and the acuteness of her memories are refreshing as well as remarkable since Northrop is now legally blind. This delightful book is recommended for most public libraries. It would also be an ideal title for large print.

From Booklist

Northrop writes in her introduction that her book is an attempt to share her experiences, joys and sorrows, laughter and tears, with people who believe, or may come to believe, how much the country matters. Of the 26 pieces, 7 appeared in a column for Country Living magazine. The author grew up on a North Carolina farm and there are essays on her love of insects, on birds, on walking in the woods, and on Christmas. There are remembrances from her married life: of her tabby tomcat, Poo; of several Labrador retrievers; of crows; of the couple's historic stone house in Orange County, New York; of her favorite cookware; and of a fly-fishing trip down the Miramichi River in New Brunswick. Northrop also writes of her father's love of the outdoors and of his fishing trips and of her love of an old barn. Northrop's charming pieces will make city dwellers want to pack up and move to the country. George Cohen

This is a wonderful book! I enjoyed Jo Northrup's column in Country Living for years. In this book, she brings the same charm she brought to her column. I especially like to read this book on nights when I can't sleep. It's low stress!

5.0 out of 5 stars Remembering Jo Northrop, February 10, 2010

This review is from: Country Matters (Hardcover)
I have followed Jo Northrop's columns in Country Living Magazine for years. The same writing that made you become a part of whatever she was writing is carried on in the book. Her outlook, sense of humor, thought provoking words were a delight to read. Though Jo passed away years ago, I feel as though she is right here with me as I read, all the while wanting to go back to that past era of country life. I really enjoyed this book.
