The bulk of the book is made up of biographies of hall of fame members and contemporary performers, including last year's rising star, Billy Ray Cyrus. A number of important contemporary stars have no essays. Even k. d. lang, whose picture is on the back cover, doesn't have an entry. Biographies open with vital statistics, real name, nicknames, and instruments, followed by a narrative on the subject's life and career. The entries close with a list of greatest hits, career highlights, and "cowlicks" (trivia). This book is nowhere near as comprehensive as The Harmony Encyclopedia of Country Music, but Harmony hasn't been updated since 1987.
Among the important lists are number-one country songs, gold and platinum albums, Grammy winners in country categories, and Country Music Association awards. Country music fan clubs are also listed. Two chronologies outline country music history and its tragedies. A number of other trivia lists are given. A name index indexes both the biographies and various lists. Many performers who don't have their own entries will be found in the lists. Black-and-white photos appear with each biography and elsewhere in the book.
This almanac does not fill the need in libraries for a good current biographical dictionary on country music, but it does present current information on those it covers in a readable format. At this price it would be useful in circulating or reference collections of any public library.
