Editorial Reviews

It was as natural as apple pie and ice cream to put two country-picking guitar legends like Merle Travis and Joe Maphis, buddies since they'd first met in 1942, in the recording studio at the same time. The results find these fretboard wizards blazing their way through a highprofile 1963 set of backwoods chestnuts, including dazzling material from the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, the Delmore Brothers and Chet Atkins, not to mention a handful of traditional faves like "Big Midnight Special" and "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down." The exhilarating pairing of Travis and Maphis never sounded better--absolute fingers on fire!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily the Best Album This Duo Ever Recorded, September 5, 2005
This review is from: Country Music's Two Guitar Greats (Audio CD)
What needs to be said here? If you're reading this, you already know that Merle Travis and Joe Maphis are two of the greatest guitarists who ever lived. All you need to know is that this is the pair's best outing among all of the recordings they made together--in print and out of print. This album's got the best production and it's got the best tunes. Prepared to be blown away. If, by chance, you stumbled upon this review and you don't know much about Merle Travis or Joe Maphis and you're an aspiring guitar player, by all means take the plunge. Just be prepared for the consequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joe Maphis, Merle Travis Country Music's Two guitar greats., January 21, 2011

Joe and Merle were friends for years, often appearing on Town Hall Party in Compton Califonia. Joe was one of the fastest guitar pickers in the world, while Merle played his famous Travis Still finger picking. This is a must for anyone interested in guitar legends.
