Purposefully ignored by the so-called "Modern Country Music" establishment, Ernest Tubb was one of Country Music's greatest stars, a true pioneer of the genre and the forefather of "Honky Tonk". Although never an outstanding vocalist, he knew how to put across a lyric and his sincere style coupled with the ability to choose songs that resonated with the public enabled him to enjoy widespread popularity while developing an intensely loyal fanbase. Tubb did not introduce the electric guitar in country music, but no one was more influential in popularizing the instrument and leading to its widespread usage in the country string bands east of the Mississippi.

Ernest Tubb rose to stardom at a time when Country Music was dominated by West Coast-based artists who were riding a boom largely fueled by the migration of thousands of people from Texas and Oklahoma to the wartime defense plants in CA. The country sound of the West Coast artists featured sophisticated arrangements featuring multiple fiddles, accordions and even trumpets. Tubb's music, characterized by simple melodic arrangements with electric guitar leads, stood in contrast to this. Eventually it was Tubb's style that won out. Today it's perceived that Bob Wills was a much bigger star than Tubb, but the opposite was actually true.

This Jasmine collection is not a reissue of selected recordings, but actually a straight-up reissue of four Ernest Tubb albums released in the 1950s. The first 12 tracks on CD1 comprised the album "Ernest Tubb Favorites" from 1956. This album was essentially an early "best of" collection, featuring many of his early hits, including the recording that made him a star and his theme song, "I'm Walking the Floor Over You" from 1941.

If you dig Ernest Tubb and that ole country from the 40's to the 60's and if you like Hank Snow, Lefty Frizzell and etc. you'll really like Mr. Tubb's tunes. Unique voice, great songs as familiar as mashed potatoes and gravy. Good album which I believe is a collection of 3 of his early albums. A little older but sounds pretty darn good. Check it out!

The Texas Troubadour shows why he's one of the seminal country pioneers on this double CD set. A must have for any classic country fan.
