Top Customer Reviews

I have been an Acoustic Guitar Magazine's subscriber for four years and it is my intention to remain that way in the years to come. But in spite of my loyalty to this magazine, I firmly believe that this book is a real waste of time. It is an insipid collection of past lessons with no real focus, no discussion and zero feedback from the artists. All you get is a tablature (and standard notation), a brief and almost anonymous rendition of the lick you are studying, and nothing else.
If you really want to learn the fundamentals of slide and acoustic blues guitar, I would highly recommend you the audio-books lessons by Stefan Grossman Guitar Workshop series ("Delta Blues", "Shake that thing: The Guitar of Mississippi John Hurt, vol. 1", etc.); they are an extraordinary option. Grossman will teach full songs NOTE by NOTE, finger by finger, bar by bar with attention to details, in slow and full speed, he will explain (and suggest) proper fingering and alternate ways of playing a chord or a lick. The lessons are complementary from one book to another: the licks that you will learn when studying Charley Patton will provide you with a solid foundation and will help you a lot when trying to learn new songs by other artists (Willie Brown, Tommy Johnson, and Son House). And while I accept that this may sound obvious to some readers, the true is that you don't get this whole perspective and coherence in the Acoustic Guitar Magazine book. Grossman also includes an audio of the song by the original performers.
You can't go wrong: Grossman's audio books are three hours long and they will provide you with an encyclopedia of guitar licks and blues repertoire at a minimum cost.
