Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Many home sewers and fabric crafters have a stash of remnants and colorful old clothing but really don't have any plans for what to do with them. Bawden (The Cushion Book, Abbeville, 1995) and Reeves have the answer. Castoffs are traditionally used in rag rugs, and Bawden has instructions for hooked, braided, and woven rugs, as well as a British variation of reverse hooking called "prodded." In addition to general instructions and several projects, her book has a gallery of works by other designers. Reeves ventures into rag chair seats, greeting cards, wreaths, and jewelry, as well as the usual rugs. Her use of cut-up knit sweaters is unusual and effective. All her projects have step-by-step instructions and lists of materials. Both books are colorful and very practical.

From Booklist

Rag may acquire additional meaning as an adjective with the publication of Reeves' introduction to rag crafts. Although country style to some people might be equivalent to kitschlike, primitive-looking cows, sheep, and geese, in the author's hands it--as well as rag rugs, rag wearables, and rag decorating--becomes sophisticated, uptown design. The full-color photographs, all a melange of different projects, not just one or two, give readers a great sense of the possibilities, especially since the 50 projects contain only generic instructions. Some of the featured ideas are old indeed, from the rag rugs to coiled carpets. Others reveal both Reeves' familiarity with a variety of techniques (marbling, tie-dyeing, needlework) and her genuine creativity, such as stuffing clear plastic tubing (materials used for wine making) with brightly colored scraps. Earth-friendly, environmentally conscious, and innovative design. Barbara Jacobs

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, original ideas for useful crafts, March 23, 2007
This review is from: Country Rag Crafts (Hardcover)
The book features fun, unusual projects and juicy colors. It's well illustrated so that you can create the same effects yourself, throughout your home.

I used this book to put a fresh, woven seat in a rocking chair, and the results were beyond anything I'd dared hope for. I can't imagine this book ever seeming "dated" and you'll refer to it again and again.

The author is British, so some supplies have different names in the U.S., but if you ask at the art supply or hardware store (take the book with you), they'll point you in the right direction.

If you love unique DIY projects that actually turn out as well (or better than) the pictures, this book will delight you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book for Fabric Art--unique!, June 23, 2007
This review is from: Country Rag Crafts (Hardcover)
I am impressed by this book and the uniqueness of it. It's filled with beautiful color photography of the projects and well drawn black and white diagrams of how to do things. The book is also well organized: Example: For making a Papier Mache and Rag Bowl, author suggests first getting "design inspiration" by visiting textile and embroidery exhibitions to see how artists blend texture, color, and stitching. Then the author goes on to discuss "planning the decoration" by looking at the fabric and it's texture and shapes or patterns., etc.. Next, "applying the decoration". THen, "making a collection of bowls", the "making the decorated bowl"---materials are listed, then a numbered step-by-step directions in a well-explained and simple manner, followed by colorful artsy photo of a possible finished piece of beautiful art.

I never realized all the wonderful things you can do with colorful fabric and the beauty of the textures and designs.
