LONG STORY SHORT: If you have no idea what to do, and have the time to read the book cover to cover, fine. If you want to go directly to information on a specific subject or place, forget it....

I've read numerous books about NJ and realized there are two kinds: the encyclopedic approach: all facts and figures, make finding what you want easy. then there's the other kind which tells you how to get there, what you'll see along the way, where to eat, where to shop, and how to get to the next place they're recommending you visit. You learn as much about the area as you do the subject matter. This is not my kind of book, and unfortunately thats what this book is.

It does an excellent job of hitting all the high points driving in and around NJ, and its clear the authors spent time in the area, really capturing the texture and feel of these towns. It's thorough, but there are other books that capture the feel of Nj, such as A season at the Shore, or Back Roads of NJ. I expected facts and figures and I got more exposition and local flavor then I really cared for.

I imagine most others would likely give it one more star then I did, so I'm explaining my reasons for only giving it 3 stars. it's thorough, its complete, its well written and reseached, its just not the book I thought I was buying. Most folks will do well using this book as a guide, IF you can find what you're looking for.

One thing I couldnt help but laugh at: the writers do not like commercial districts. Take this passage: "Don't be put off by the first sights you'll encounter as you head North on Long beach Blvd. The commercial district if Ship Bottom & Surf City are swaths of ugly shopping strips, outlandish mini golf courses & shell shops"

This book is like having a local tour guide in your car. The text is conversational as it points out places to stop and historic trivia about the towns. Organized into twelve regions around the state, the detailed driving directions navigate you through the towns on local roads. Road names and route numbers are used as well as landmarks. Each chapter begins and ends with directions to the main highways. We were able to plan a trip that pleased adults, pre-teens and young children. It gives you the places to eat, sleep or shop that usually only locals know about.
