About the Artist
Sometimes Will Gunnell finds a song coming on at the strangest times. The Danville-born musician began writing Sweet Tea, the final song on his latest CD, Country Side of the County Line, while taking out the trash. He has been known to scrawl lyrics on check stubs, napkins and the back of his hand, keeping one eye on the road and one hand on the wheel so his ideas wont evaporate before he has a chance to put them on paper. For the majority of my ideas, I hear a word or a phrase and it might spark some kind of interest, he said, and if I can keep it spinning in my head long enough, it will evolve into something better. But theres no really set way. Gunnell began performing with local country bands at age 13, and has spent time in Nashville refining his craft. He works like any writer, penning pieces, then revising them, although he says he is never 100 percent satisfied with the finished product. I hear things that other people cant hear, he said. But with Country Side, hes ultimately proud of the entire recording, first song to last. With this CD, I was really trying to have fun with it, he said. The new compilation is infused with elements of Southern rock, bluegrass and influences ranging from Motley Crue and KISS to Johnny Cash. That mix baffled Nashville when he first moved there about a decade ago to try his hand working as a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
