Welcome to the sound of Winston Yellen and Night Beds, who in one stunning ten-track debut album Country Sleep, have shown that there is plenty of life left in the world of American music if you have the voice, the songs and the gift to touch hearts and souls. Think of a space between Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon), Gram Parsons and the dreamier side of My Morning Jacket; a heavenly place of pure country soul, touched by an endearing innocence and honesty that can only come from someone still in their early twenties.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Journey!!! February 9, 2013
By Rooster
Format:MP3 Music
I read a review of this on Pitchfork, sampled it on Amazon (doesn't do it justice)and decided to buy it. Each day I load my iPod with music and listen while reading a book on my commute into Boston. Often the music fades into the background while I'm lost in the story of the book. Not possible with "Country Sleep." As soon as I heard Winston Yellen's haunting voice on the a cappella opening track I shut the book and just stared out the window I was so moved by this from start to finish. A major blizzard just passed through this past Friday night. My wife and kids were watching something on TV that didn't interest me so I went into the other room, started a fire, shut off the lights and put on "Country Sleep" taking advantage of the fuller audio of our home entertainment system. What an incredible sound world! Understated and yet so lush and engrossing. With apologies to the artist I have to make the obligatory comparisons. He sounds a bit like Ray LaMontagne accompanied by the evocative, hushed harmonies of Bon Iver. I mean that as a compliment. It sounds so beautiful that I was choked up the whole way through. Each track flows so seamlessly into the next. I do wish they would have stretched it out a little longer in the end of "Even If We Try" when it transitions into that upbeat jam with the hand claps and the violin. My wife came in and joined me on the couch and was instanly taken in by the music. She asked who it was and later asked me to add to her iPhone (is that bad?) They are playing at Great Scott in March and I will be there. Please buy this and make the time to do nothing but listen and enjoy this stunning creation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Dreams September 13, 2013
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
Not long ago, in the store where I work, I met a young man named Winston. We discussed books and talked a bit about his interests in authors. His literary tastes intrigued me, and eventually I got around to asking what he does. He told me about a band he plays in called Night Beds and though I was unfamiliar with the band, I decided his reading interests alone (and the fact this his friend, another member of the band who was there at the time, seemed to have good tastes in books as well) were reason for me to check out his and his bands music. I decided to go ahead and order a vinyl copy of "Country Sleep". The album arrived recently and I have to say, this album definitely deserves the high regard it's received in other reviews here and elsewhere. This album is WELL worth checking out. I'm generally a rock and roll/blues/jazz fan but at times I also very much enjoy more subtle forms of music. Country Sleep fits those mellow moods perfectly.

If you're looking for something reflective, dream like, introspective, this is it. Ripe with gorgeous melodies, well crafted tunes, and a touch of Nashville, Country Sleep is the start of something big. I have no doubt we'll be hearing more from this young and talented artist and his fellow musicians.

Well done, Winston and company!

4.0 out of 5 stars Night Beds -Are you ready for the country February 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Night Beds are essentially Colorado singer Winston Yellon a 23 year old musician blessed with embarrassingly high levels of talent. Those of you who saw the wonderful Sharon Van Etten in London at her Shepherds Bush gig a while back may have stumbled upon him as a support act. His debut album "Country Sleep" was allegedly recorded in a 10 month period during which he rented a house outside Nashville, formerly owned by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. If the ghost of the Man in black was present then he would have approved since one thing is for sure that this lovely, warm and wistful album with echoes of Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver, Robin Pecknold and Jim James will propel Mr Yellon to headline slots in the blink of an eye. While there there is nothing outstandingly original here what Yellon does is to take the gorgeous strains of his sumptuous voice and infuse a set of ten songs with plaintive melancholy and aching beauty. It is often an intoxicating mix which does echo that sad compelling vibe and poignant atmosphere that Bon Iver struck on his sublime debut "For Emma, Forever Ago". Yellon however is no mere log cabin marooned copyist. "Country Sleeps" is packed with songs which shows heightened maturity and a ear for a good tune.

Thus you have the lovely pop of "Ramona" which skips along at a nice pace and has you singing at the top of your voice in a matter of seconds. Even better is the haunting a capella ring of "Even if we try" a song so destined to be a classic that Paddy Power should stop taking bets. It tugs at your heart and reminds you to buy that Valentine card for the one you love. The song "22" is a rustic, rolling, song with echoes of the Fleet Foxes but with the sweeter infusion of Yellon's soft vocals.

5.0 out of 5 stars lush and gorgeous February 9, 2013
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
my favorite album of 2013 so far. I bought this after seeing a video for "Even if we Try" on YouTube - the album is full of gorgeous melodies and soundscapes. The review before mine does a better job of describing their sound, so I won't repeat it, but I believe just about anyone would find this record appealing. Terrific vocal harmonies. Really impressed!

I've had this album on repeat since purchasing it. The opening song hooked me in and every time the last track fade out, my heart is sad.
