Perfect way to fill the holes in your collection,

While only a few superstars are represented in this collection, the collection offers you an outstanding survey of the best of many second-tier country stars: Hank Locklin, Leroy Van Dyke, Wanda Jackson, Tex Ritter, etc. While not all tracks here are classics, several are truly amazing. I single out Stonewall Jackson's "Don't be Angry" and Narvel Felt's cover of the soul classic "Drift Away". If you are starting a country collection, this purchase could save you hundreds.

God bless all you real country lovers. This CD is Roots Music. Please check it out. I am a lover of Surenuff Texas Honky Tonk. But these ol'timers had it all figgerd out. WE FOUGHT WARS AND DID OUR DUTY!!. Give this a listen, from our roots. You won't be sorry. Where it all started. Jimmy Rogers would have been proud.

An excellent compilation of Country classics,

It's sad that this set has been discontinued. If you can get your paws on one, I recommend it. It contains many memorable songs that would be difficult, if not impossible to amass. I purchased this comp set several years ago for Mel Street's "Borrowed Angel" that I couldn't find anywhere else. Definately a good investment for anyone who appreciates classic Country mainstream music.
Some purist classic Country fans may not appreciate the addition of a few tracks from Alabama in this set. But all in all, it's a nice set. Who could forget "Lonesome 7-7203" by Hawkshaw Hawkins? How about "One Minute Past Eternity" by Jerry Lee Lewis? And Mac Wiseman has a couple of popular Bluegrass or "flat-footin'" classics here with "Rocky Top" and "Jimmy Brown, the Newsboy". Also included are some great Country waltz turns from the old days. The only drawback (and my reasoning for the 4 stars): Many of these tracks are not the original recordings that we grew up hearing on the radio. They're remakes. Not remasters. Remakes by the original artists. Just wanted to pass that along. Still, they're great listening. The remakes have a decent sound quality. |
