5.0 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Masterpiece, September 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Country Suite (Audio CD)
This album, now available on CD, is an overlooked masterpiece from the 70's. Why this wonderful recording never reached a large audience is anybody's guess, I suppose. My own theory is that the album reaches so far and wide in subject matter and style that it could not be categorized as a member of any of the singular programming formats (album oriented, hard country, progressive country, easy listening, top 40, even contemporary gospel) characteristic of radio airplay at the time and, therefore, could not be successfully promoted by the record company. What a shame. From the first note to the last, what Dave Loggins created with Country Suite is pure joy for the discerning listener. The instrumentation and arrangements are spot on. The sound is crystal clear. The background vocals are creative and truly entertaining (e.g., "Lovin' Somebody on a Rainy Night"). And Loggins' lead vocals are nearly perfect in every way. The sustain and expression in his voice are models for any singer hoping to be regarded as a true artist. This is a great, GREAT musical experience, truly a treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden jem, February 7, 2010

I bought this album when it first came out in the 70's and remembered how much I loved it. I have been buying CD's to replace some of my favorites and when I first looked for this it wasn't available. A short time ago ,I looked again for it and ordered it right away when I saw it on CD. I was surprised that no one had written anything about it since I always read the reviews at the bottom of the page. When I did finally play it after all these years, I loved it just as much as I did then. Every song is great ,I cannot think of enough good things to say about it. Dave Loggins really put his heart and soul in this work and I for one would like to tell him how much enjoyment I have gotten out of it. The first four songs I found myself singing all the words even after more than 30 years. I still buy a lot of today's music as well such as Lady Antebellum and I think this CD has not aged, It still holds up well against today's music. I have a lot of CD's and if someone asked me which one is the best hidden gem, I would easily say this one is. He is a great songwriter as well. Please give this a try you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten gem, December 16, 2011
This review is from: Country Suite (Audio CD)
I bought this record as a 15 year old in 1976. Despite being 35 years old this masterpiece has aged well - it still sounds contemporary. On the heels of "Apprentice", Columbia must have invested some money into this record because it's pretty intricate. As noted in other reviews, this record has everything - songwriting, lyrics, arrangements, sound quality, as well as intangibles. Beyond this, the songs flow seamlessly - the first song is purer country and the second side is a little more on the pop side; some thought was obviously put into the song order. Highly recommended.
