Product Description

From the Manufacturer

In the not too distant future, the government is run for profit by a new "royal class" of multi-national CEOs. Their greed and absolute control of the economy has reduced all but a privileged few to lives of poverty and desperation. Out of the oppressed masses rose The Resistance, an underground organization focused on overthrowing these powerful rulers. The valiant efforts of The Resistance have created discord, intrigue and weakness in the political courts of the novena royal, bringing the government to brink of collapse. But for you, a powerful government official, this is your opportunity to manipulate, bribe and bluff your way into absolute power.

Highly recommended, well made game as well!

Rounds usually take less than 10 minutes, so many games can be played quickly and being eliminated is not painful.

Some people relied on bluffing to win, while other players won games without a single bluff.

I missed out on the kickstarter, but grabbed a couple copies of this game as soon as it was available on Amazon. It's tons of fun to play, even with only 2 players. Games are short (5-10 minutes). Compared to other fun, short games like Love Letter, there is more strategy. It also scales up well if you have more people. It's hard to find a bluffing game that works with less than 5 people (I'm looking at you, The Resistance and Werewolf).

The product/manufacturer descriptions do not describe this game very well. There are 5 different cards (and 3 copies of each). Each one gives you a special ability within the game. You are dealt 2 cards for your hand. The goal is to force your opponents to turn over (discard) both of their cards. Each turn you can choose to draw money from the bank or take a special action. Actions include spending money to force an opponent to discard, stealing money from an opponent and taking extra money from the bank. Cards can also be used even when it's not your turn to block others from taking certain actions. However, since all cards are dealt face down, you are free to pretend you have *any* card and can take any action you want. If someone challenges you, you have to either show that you have the card you claimed or you are forced to turn over a card (discarding it). If someone challenges you and you were telling the truth, they are the one who has to discard.

I played this with 3 players today and really love how well this game has gone over. The objective of this game is to eliminate everyone else by depleting their influence of character cards through actions of assassinations and coups. Mechanically, the game is very elegant and gameplay breezes by pretty fast. Players will try to get coins as fast as possible to be either to assassinate or perform a coup on another player to get them out of the game. Players will have 2 character cards (of 5 possible types) intially at their disposal to get the job finished, however, they're free to bluff the other 3 characters to further accomplish their needs. Bluffs can be called on ("challenged") and the loser also loses influence in that aspect as well.

My experience of this game is so far quite positive. I'm loving the cyberpunk artwork this game carries. The component quality is solid with excellent card quality and nice card board coins. Easy setup and breakdown, with the rules being not too difficult to teach. This game was a little difficult at first getting all the roles (5 of them) down in what they do, but after repeated plays, the game became a breeze. I can see this being a really great game for 3-6 players, being able to knock down a few matches in 30 minutes.

Highly recommended for people looking for a short game of bluffing and risk taking.

I have played this game at least 80 times with many different people. It is:
- Surprisingly deep game for having very simple rules.
- Rounds usually take less than 10 minutes, so many games can be played quickly and being eliminated is not painful.
- The game is based around special abilities and bluffing, but a completely honest player still has a decent chance of winning.
- The box is quite small, so it can be taken on the go easily.
- Plays 2 to 6, but 4 players seems optimal.

I highly recommend this game, and people I've played it with have already begun buying their own copies.

If you're looking for a fun 2-6p (need to accomodate more than that - get more copies of the game or just add marked regular playing cards to it in sets) party game look no further! This game is the perfect warmup/warm-down game for family gatherings or casual hangouts. It is extremely easy to pick up and yet holds a surprisingly large amount of strategy. It's easy to learn, hard to master.

The box is tiny so it's portable and travels easily! The components of the game all fit into the box perfectly.
Speaking of the components they are the cards, summary sheets, instructions booklet and tokens.

The card art is perfect and suits the game - definitely admirable even after hours of play.
The tokens could've been better but do their job and are sturdy.

Summary: If you want to play a quick game that requires deduction and deception - this is your game. I can only say that playing with quiet/timid people will be slightly frustrating (if they don't talk much) but aside from that - it flows regardless.

I played Coup for the first time last night with 4 players and all of us were new to the game. The first play through went slowly as we confirmed our understanding of the basic rules and got up to speed on how to handle bluffs, counteractions and calling bluffs. Our subsequent games went very fast - less than 10 minutes each.

To win Coup you must eliminate all your opponents character cards (or "Influence" in the game's parlance). Each turn you will take a single action. There are a couple basic actions always available to you - for instance, you may take 1 coin from the pile. But each player is also dealt two character cards. These describe additional actions and counter actions available to you. For example, the Duke can take 3 coins from the pile each turn. The Captain can steal 2 coins from another player and can block others from stealing. The Assassin can pay 3 coins to eliminate another opponents character card. The Contessa can block an Assassination attempt. There are others character types plus a couple basic actions you may take regardless of the characters in your hand. Where Coup becomes exciting is you may take any action you like, even if you don't have the associated character card, by bluffing. If you get away with it, great! But an opponent may call you bluff and if you are caught, you lose a character card (lose both, and you're out of the game). However if someone claims you are bluffing, but you are not, THEY lose one of their character cards. The art and fun come from choosing what action to take (which may require bluffing), calling bluffs, learning your opponents tendencies, making your opponents think you have characters you don't, and trying to deduce the characters held by your opponents.

The rules are easy to teach and understand.
