5.0 out of 5 stars ... KICKS YOUR HIPPY A$$!!!
Better than Time Travelling Blues (which was also rad.) The guitars and bass are a bit more fuzzed out, drums a little faster, and vocals more aggro thanks to the production of ex-Kyuss/Obsessed bassist Scott Reeder. Hey, even John Garcia sings on two of these songs (another star.) A nice cover of We Bite by the Misfits is near the end of the album. Basically, combines...

3.0 out of 5 stars Slipping a little
Orange Goblin's first 3 albums revived my faith in modern bands to produce good stuff. As an old timer who still has the Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper LPs that first appeared when I was a teenager, OG was a welcome discovery after a decade or three of whiny, self-absorbed [junk].

However, Coup de Grace just doesn't grab me the way the first three albums did. I like...

3.0 out of 5 stars Slipping a little, August 17, 2002

Orange Goblin's first 3 albums revived my faith in modern bands to produce good stuff. As an old timer who still has the Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper LPs that first appeared when I was a teenager, OG was a welcome discovery after a decade or three of whiny, self-absorbed [junk].

However, Coup de Grace just doesn't grab me the way the first three albums did. I like every song on every other album, but for some reason I just haven't been able to get into this one. The rhythms seem more frantic yet less powerful, and the vocals step out in front of the music rather than blending in with it. IMO 'Red Web', and to some extent 'Stinkin O Gin' would be the only exceptions.

I know bands evolve, its a fact of life, but since there aren't any other reviews of this album, I thought I'd toss this out here and hope for a return to roots that aren't that old for these guys yet!

4.0 out of 5 stars Orange Goblin has changed...and it is good, September 17, 2002

This CD is definately of a more hardcore slant v.s. the old style, slower sludge metal. I'll admit that it was the psychedelic tracks of previous albums (particularly "Frequences..") that turned me onto this band in the first place. But I love this new CD..much better than the last one, Big Black. The John Garcia (of Kyuss) tracks are just icing on the cake. This is a fantastic CD, but dont be looking for the psycho-stoner rock of before..this is a much more aggresive sound for them...and it is good. Enjoy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Maybe their worst album, January 5, 2012
This review is from: Coup De Grace (MP3 Download)
I iked very much Time Travelling Blues and i liked their 2 other previous albums. Well this album unfortunately is a big dissapointment. The riffs and melodies are really terrible. It is just an albim only for huge fans of Orange Goblin or just for collectors. I dont like any song.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not their strongest., October 11, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Coup De Grace (Audio CD)
I've never really gotten into this album, despite coming back to it many times trying to do so. I loved the groove of Time Travelling Blues, the spacey jams on Frequencies and The Big Black, and Thieving is simply the greatest hard rock album since the turn of the new millenium. This one however... not so much.

It has it's moments, noticeably the monumental riff on 'Getting High on the Bad Times' and 'Stinkin O' Gin' is a terffic closer but besides that, the album doesn't have the variety of some of their others and many songs seem to remind you of the ones you heard a moment ago. The playing is tight, the production is good (hat-tip to Scott Reeder) and the artwork is something else but on the whole, nowhere near their best effort. Punk fans may even find something for them. If you're new to the Goblins, get 'The Big Black' or 'Thieving From the House of God' as both are stunning. Make this one your last purchase from their catalogue.

4.0 out of 5 stars mind melting horror? mind melting metal, September 2, 2002

This review is from: Coup De Grace (Audio CD)
having been suitibly impressed with frequencies, i bought this album. i was not dissapointed. The difference from previous releases is a change in sound. with a more prominent punk persuasion. The john garcia tracks are a nice touch, reminiscent of unida. Part of me feels a loss of style however it is more than made up for with attitude.buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars HEAVY, May 16, 2002

I can't believe these guys are not from the southern US. I have all of the Goblin cds and love them all but this one takes the cake. "Stinkin o gin" sounds like it should have been on the Down II album... it has that swampy and heavy as hell feel to it. If you have never heard of this band and you like DOWN, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, COC, ATOMIC BITCHWAX, and classic BLACK SABBATH... then get this cd... or all of them while you're at it. If you are disapointed than you can't be cool or have any taste for good old fashioned HEAVY music. Immagine Skynrd meets Sabbath meets Metallica meets a very loud tube amp... and that's what the GOBLIN has in store for you. This cd sounds very good if you are "cool" at the time... I'm sure they were!

4.0 out of 5 stars Orange Goblin beats Jesus, December 13, 2007
This review is from: Coup De Grace (Audio CD)
Generally, I find Orange Goblin to be a dull interpolation of Monster Magnet, Sleep and Kyuss. That isn't to say they're a bad band--I'm sure it would be awesome to see them rock some sweaty boozehall in Leeds--just an uninteresting one. This album is the exception.

As usual, OG rocks harder than hell. But this time they find their own idiosyncratic style, which draws from hardcore punk and Paranoid era Sabbath and vividly conveys the aesthetic of a gory Frank Miller comic. As an added bonus, there are some very nice guest vocals from John Garcia. Orange Goblin initially explored the possibility of having Garcia sing the whole album--but they were fortunate not to go that route. While Garcia's performances are excellent, Ben Ward's ugly voice proves to be the perfect vehicle for this album's campy low-art lyrics about alcohol, self abuse, zombie attacks, psychotic monkeys, outwitting Jesus and a barbarian superhero with big hands.

Coup de Grace is tight, fun and innovative and is far and away Orange Goblin's best.
