This repair manual claims to have 500 pages covering all Volvo models from 1990 to 1998. It has barely 200 pages and it only gives a semblance of covering those models well. The manual gives illustrations of repair function on one model, but gives none for the other models. It uses engine repair illustrations that are not even Volvo engines. There are few illustrations of repair functions of the 960 model.

Frankly, I haven't been all that impressed with any of the repair manual's issued for Volvo. All third-party manuals tend to be vague and overly broad; Chilton's is particularly poorly focused, unnecessarily ambitious in model year breadth and maddening incomplete in coverage. I cannot reccomend this manual as a sole source for the enterprising shade tree mechanic. Yet, there are times when I find it as an essential compliment to the Haynes manual. Haynes is published out of England, and tends to ignore features specific to US model cars (FI troubleshooting is a weakness of the Haynes; Chilton's manual covers this area at an acceptible level.

They tried to cover too much in too little space. Very limited electrical schematics and poor descriptions. Sorry I bought it and am looking for another one.

Yes, this book does cover a models, and for that I give it two stars. However, many times I felt like I was doing something wrong. The book can too short sometimes, leaving the reader wondering what to do next.

Volvo is a company that needs more car manuals. They make very good cars and it's a shame that most of the better manuals are not sold in stores.

If you want to learn more about your Volvo, then get this book along with your dealer's manuals. I also highly recommend Auto Repair for Dummies by Deanna Sclar.

I purchased this manual to help me diagnose and repair some problems with my '98 V70 XC. So far I have yet to find one repair that is possible with this frustratingly inadequate manual. I went to replace a seemingly simple part (heater core) and found that this one had sections for 240, 740, 850 models, etc., but none for V70 (this tendency to completely leave out models re-occurs throughout the book). Also, some sections (when you actually can find repair instructions for your specific model) are overly vague and frustrating for the home mechanic. Example: When attempting to replace a front axleshaft, the book might say something like: 1. Remove wheel 2. Remove axleshaft from bevel gear assembly. 3. Assembly is the reverse of removal. ???????????????????????????????????????? How about some details guys? What about those of us who don't happen to work in a Volvo repair shop? In a nutshell, this is the last Chilton's manual I will ever buy. I am browsing for a Haynes manual at this moment, always had a Haynes manual for my previous cars, never found an issue I couldn't fix with it.

I own a 940 and this book was my only option for purchase at the local parts shop. I bought a Chiltons book in the past for a previous car and was thinking maybe they improved the quality of information...sad to say its still horrible. One thing Chiltons got going for them is that they have great distribution, Haynes really needs to work on their distribution and get out to all the car parts stores, I always have problems finding Haynes books.

Needless to say this book tries to cover a wide range of models and falls flat on its face like a mumbeling drunk. Case in point the information on how to change the external high pressure fuel pump on a 940 is worthless. Save your money, time and frustration and look online at forums for repair advice and get yourself a Haynes repair manuel.

i have a 1990 740 turbo, and there's not a lot of model specific info. luckily most of the earlier models "covered" by this manual are very similar. if you've never worked on a car before, do not expect step-by-step instuctions and therefore do not choose this product. i would recomend the following title instead if you have a 740, "Volvo 740 and 760 (Petrol) 1982-91 Service and Repair Manual (Haynes Service and Repair Manuals) [Hardcover]" by matthew minter

I was really disappointed with this manual. In the past, I have come to appreciate other Chilton Publications, but this one is useless!!! It is hard to read, it doesn't give detailed instructions, the schematics are impossible to read. On a 1-10 rating, I give this one a 1 for terrible!!!

Next to worthless, this "repair manual" tried to fit too many models in one book. Very poorly done and a waste of money.

Very good user guide for do-it-yourselfers. Recommend getting the Hayes Manual too. The two compliment each other. Why pay mechanics for what you can do yourself.
