Hilarious!!,

I am a huge fan of Reiser, and I loved Mad About You. This book is a funny, gentle, warm look at the little joys and problems of marriage. I am not even married and I was laughing out loud every page. It was a quick read, and it was the kind of humor I like best - the kind with a serious message underneath. Best of all, the book is as funny on a second reading as it is the first time. A must read!

Funny, but only 10% about couples and relationships,
By A Customer
This review is from: Couplehood (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book thinking it would be about couples and the sometimes humorous ways they relate. Instead I got one sentence per chapter about a 'couple' issue and the rest of the chapter is about other life observations. It would have been much better if he just would have called it "Life Observations" - at least then I would know what I was in store for -- but maybe that would have been too Seinfeld.Another reviewer wrote this book was so great on audio - I'm sure it is because all it seems like are transcripts from stand-up routines. I suspect that may be how the book was written - that's why it has no flow. Anyway, I found it humorous in parts - but had to give it 2 stars because it had hardly anything to do with couples.

Illumination of the commonplace,
By Heath R Bradley (Russellville, AR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Couplehood (Mass Market Paperback)
Paul Reiser's book "Couplehood" is a comically insightful work that examines the commonplace marital idiosyncracies that fill the lives of those involved with life's greatest adventure and most delightful puzzle- marriage. He manages to shed a humorous light on all the things that couples tend to get frustrated about with one another; and by doing this, he allows the reader sit back and laugh at the "problems" of marriage. Problems can be dealt with better when they can be laughed at afterwards. There is one statement in the book that chrystallizes the book's message, and it is a statement I challenge all married couples to take to heart: "Enjoy the small things in life, because the big things may never come."

I really enjoyed this book, but I wouldn't say I loved it.It was really funny to see a guy's perspective on women and relationsips, and I could see myself in some of his stories. It is a good light read.

Fun to read together!,

Each night, before going to bed, my husband and I trade off reading 1 chapter from this book together, taking turns reading aloud. Sometimes it is hard to stop at only 1 chapter! Most times, we see ourselves in Paul's text, laughing ourselves to sleep. An excellent book to share!

The best put book on couples, ever!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Couplehood (Hardcover)
This book is one of, if not the, best book I've ever read. It was one of the most honest, and well put book on coulples. It had me laughing, remembering, and looking forward to the stages of "couplehood", with every page turned. It wasn't meant to be a "self-help" book, I don't think, but it made me feel good with my relationship. Simply put, he helps the world know that those funny, aqward, uncomfortable, and comfortable stages of relationships, are happening to us all. I don't think I've ever related so much to a book (or laughed so hard with the associations I made) and this is one book I'd love to read over and over.

First Comedian Read,
By Darla McFarren (Hastings, NE USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Couplehood (Mass Market Paperback)
This book really read like a comedian wrote it. I agree that I can hear Reiser's inflections as I am reading the words that he is saying. I also can see his comedic style shining through in this book. But a little too much for my tastes. The book was funny, and I could relate to it a lot, but I had some trouble following it from antecdote to antecdote. Then it hit me. It's a book, by a comedian, written in the style of a comedy show. No real plot or direction, just a series of funny little stories that Reiser shares with his audience. I haven't read any other books by any other comedians, so I'm not sure if this is the style that most of them follow. If it is, I could see this book as being a really good book in that style. I could also see a lot of the show "Mad About You" in this book as well - even though I only watched Mad About You occasionally. However, it kept me in bed at night, reading the book, even after I decided I didn't like the comedian style. It does relate to a lot of people in almost every antecdote, which kept me hooked to the book when I was reading it.

Freakin Laugh Out Loud FUNNY,
This review is from: Couplehood (Mass Market Paperback)
This book holds the title of my most embarrassing experience with airplane reading. If you need a REALLY good laugh, and I mean out loud GUFFAW type of laughing - this is your book. I was traveling alone one day and started reading it in the airport. This book was so **** funny that I would just bust out laughing and snorting. I was laughing so hard that I was crying uncontrollably and my sides were hurting. I had to keep putting the book down to compose myself so I could read the next page!!A random gentleman came up to me on the airplane and asked what the **** I was reading because he kept seeing me lay my head down to hide all the laughing and crying I was doing. He had never seen someone have so much fun flying alone. So, yes - it could be a short read, if you didn't spend so much time laughing, while trying to see through your tears. I highly recommend this title for anyone in need of an attitude adjustment.

Stand up commedy in a book,
By Jim (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Couplehood (Mass Market Paperback)
Paul Reiser is a bit wacky in this book, e.g., he starts on Page 141. It reads like a stand-up comedy routine. Normally, I like humor, but for some reason I found myself getting tired of his style of writing. There are witticisms throughout the book, but I began to feel like I was on a treasure hunt for them.It is an easy read, and was well received when published. So you may enjoy it. |
