This part is identical to the hitch couplings that come with the InStep trailers other than it is a gloss black instead of a more matte black finish. One thing not mentioned in the product description is that this incudes not only the coupler and pin (as pictured) but also the special "washer" that mounts behind the hitch to keep it horizontal.

Often a concern or issue with the cheaper trailers is if they will properly mount to more "high end" bikes. The garden variety mass market retailer bikes (i.e. the cheaper ones) usually have a horizontal dropout for the rear axle where the more expensive bikes will have a vertical dropout for the axle. The hitches are designed with mass market retailer bikes (horizontal dropouts) in mind.

These hitches will work on either. With vertical dropouts rather than following the directions provided, you must instead position the tab that sticks off the back of the washer so that it will rest against the bottom of the frame instead of within the dropout as they are designed.

My wife an I each have one of these hitches on our Raleigh Route 4.0 hybrids (that have a vertical dropouts) and they work just fine. The hitches are also completely compatible with "quick release" style hubs.

I found this out the hard way. I have a Giant road bike, and my wife has a Schwinn cruiser. The Schwinn has enough room on the dropouts to mount this as expected. But on most newer model road and mountain bikes, you will have to check that you have enough room in the dropouts to actually mount this coupler. In my case, the chain stay and the seat stay tubes come together to form a very small dropout, and so there is not enough room for the big round coupler to mount between the skewer and the dropout.
I was forced to fabricate my own adapter from an angle bracket.
If you are handy and have the tools available you will be able to do this work yourself, otherwise I would recommend finding a different coupler.
What really drives me up a wall here is that after I ran into this issue I began researching online for others who may have had this problem. And I could find forum posts as far back as 2005 of people who have had this same issue. Its been 8 years and still the company has made no effort to alter their design.
I will post pictures of what I did in the Customer images section.

I bought this so we could pull our child trailer with both mine or my wive's bike. Takes only a small adjustable wrench to install. The lock pin U-clip is very firm. Best part of this setup is the child trailer will not tip over if you dump your bike.

There is not much to say about this one. It does the job perfect and it is durable. I haven't had any problems putting it in place or using it with a trailer

Bought this coupler for a second bike. The bike trailer only comes with one coupler, since they take a little work to get on the bike, I decided to get a second one, so that I wouldn't have to interchange the coupler every time I wanted to change up the bike pulling the trailer. This has worked great, it saves me a lot of time and hassle. Now I can attach the trailer to which ever bike works best and go. Very easy to assemble on to the bike, once there, nothing more needs to be done. Its not in the way either when not in use.

it's just like the original. I personally think a backup coupler is necessary.

After a year of pulling approximately 100 lbs averaging over once a month, I found I needed to add strength to the hitch as it began bending. I first made a prototype gusset out of 4ct building tie down straps (~ 3/16"T total) then went to a solid metal flat bar 1-1/4"W.
I cut 5"L and rounding corners. I drilled 2ct 13/32" holes for the axle and hitch hub mount. A stainless steel 3/8"d x 3/4"L bolt with lock washer to mount hitch in which I also cut out for the key way washer that comes with the hitch using a metal cutting saw blade.
A # 8 stainless steel 3/4"L bolt to mount as security to the bike frame tail drilled @ 3/16".
4ct #6 s.s. 3/4"L bolts (2ct top & 2ct bottom) of the hitch drilled @ 5/32" using cobalt drill bits to drill through the bar as also the 5/32" hitch holes (using a metal punch to start the bits cleanly while hub bolted and clamped at center top). Titanium bits can work but have a tendency to break. Keep the bits oil cooled while drilling.
Being that I know the hitch is not for industrial use as I use it, for children involved, the gusset is the way to go for added safety. I recently ordered another hitch and again, extremely pleased with the fast shipping. Nevertheless, for the design I give it five stars.

Perect product. Does just what it says. We purchased the Schwinn Joyrider. It already comes with 1 coupler attachment, but having an extra one so that my wife and I can both have one on our own bikes makes family bike rides much easier. My wife will ride until she gets tired of pulling the extra weight, and then we'll pull over for a pit stop, pop the pin out, unhook the trailer, and hook it up to my bike. It takes no more than 60sec. - seriously. We leave the coupler on our bikes at all times. We do leave the pin with the trailer instead of on the bike - that way, whichever bike is not towing the trailer won't be subjected to a ratteling pin. We just keep the extra pin in the house in case the original is ever lost.
