Book Description

December 27, 1999
Following the successful debut of the Parent's Tao Te Ching--which Hugh Prather praised as "pure gold"--William Martin now reinterprets the Tao for couples. "The love relationship between two people can be the most rewarding and enlightening adventure possible," Martin writes, and he imparts the Tao's spirited, sage advice for everyone on that adventure. "Not since The Tao of Pooh has Taoist wisdom transmogrified into something so practical, gentle, and good."--from the foreword by Dan Millman, author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior

Editorial Reviews

Review

In a culture where loving associations are often treated as not much more than optional interludes, it's a singular delight to find a book successfully establishing that such relationships can, instead, fill lives with a joy and fulfillment not to be found elsewhere. And when the author goes further, as in this book, and provides immediately practical guidance on how to ensure that one's own love relationship will do just that, you have found yourself a singular book, indeed. Bill Martin has already proved himself a noteworthy Tao Te Ching scholar, and in this book he does so yet again. -- George Fowler, best-selling author of Dance of a Fallen Monk: A Journey to Enlightenment

The perfect book for couples to savor in bed together one day at a time. -- Jennifer Louden, author of The Couple's Comfort Book

More About the Author

William Martin Bio.

The name given me is William Cecil Martin, Jr. Everyone calls me Bill. I am the spouse of Nancy, the father of Lara and John, and the grandfather of Jillian and Andrew. I live in Chico, California, where I teach at The Still Point Center for Zen Practice. I also write. I am the author of several books on Taoist and Zen thought, including: The Parent's Tao Te Ching, The Couple's Tao Te Ching, The Sage's Tao Te Ching, A Path and a Practice, and The Tao of Forgiveness. You can purchase these books through Amazon or any local bookstore.

My professional history is varied. If my father were alive he would still be waiting for me to get a real job. He was delighted when I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a B.S. in Engineering. He never really got over it when I left my job as an Electronic Engineer and embarked on a path that led me to a M.Div. degree from Western Theological Seminary and a brief, uncomfortable, stint as a clergy. From there I spent a few years working in Criminal Justice Reform. Then I entered private practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist and spent twelve years as a therapist and also teaching counseling at a Community College in Phoenix, Arizona.

In 1999, Nancy and I sold all of our furniture, packed our remaining possessions in a 5 ft. by 8 ft. UHall trailer, and moved to the Oregon coast. We spent a year living in a small apartment overlooking the ocean. Nancy worked at a small Inn in Newport and I wrote a book. We walked, talked, and thought about life. We felt the intensity of natural forces - wind, water, and forest. It was a transformative time.

In 2000, we moved to Chico and began The Still Point Zen Center, and a new life. We are delighted with every moment of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Love, February 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Couple's Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Lovers (Paperback)
This book goes straight to the heart of the matter. No rules to follow, no advice for the lovelorn, this is a book that will shine a light in all of the dark places and show couples where their love stands and where it can lead. The Couple's Tao Te Ching is absolute proof that true love does exist for without pure love- this book could not be written. Share this with your mate and together uncover the depths of your relationship. I strongly promote this book because it puts into simple terms the behavior of true love without resorting to teaching games of manipulation and suspicion. It gives you the opportunity to see the truth, the plain simple truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who loves -- or wants to love, October 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Couple's Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Lovers (Paperback)
This loving interpretation of Lao Tzu's sometimes enigmatic Tao Te Ching is a warm-hearted and wonderful primer on unconditional love. This is the perfect book to read to your partner in bed each evening (I do). We will read passages from it at our wedding, as well. Also, this is not the usual icky-poo stuff on unconditional loving -- it has a straght to the heart of the matter tone that sets it apart from most other things I've read. If you love your partner, or would like to love him or her again the way you used to, read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lends a vision of what is worth waiting for..., December 19, 2002

Each time I think it's time I settled for something less than fulfilling in life I sit down and read through this book. It calms my soul. It realigns my senses to what it is I'm truly seeking in life and in a partner. I have given this as a wedding gift to those who I think have the mind and soul for such small wisdom as this. I would recommend this book to anyone who seeks to be complete before entering into a relationship or who seeks understanding of why their past relationship failed. It has helped me to keep clarity of mind.
