Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I personally love coupons; otherwise I wouldn't have written this book!  My mom couponed when I was a little girl - on Sunday mornings, I loved sitting at the kitchen table cutting coupons out for my mom for the week.  When I quit my corporate job and started by own business, I had to figure out how to budget better since my income was so irregular.  While I had used coupons sporadically for years, it wasn't until my income became unpredictable that I really looked into how to effectively coupon.  I started researching couponing on the Internet and quickly discovered how much money you can save and MAKE by using coupons effectively.

I think of coupons as cash.  There's really no other way to think of them.  In fact, at my local grocery store, I have made a purchase, forgotten to use a coupon and gone to the customer service counter to re-do the transaction only to find that they just give me cash for the coupon!  In other words, if the coupon was for $1 off of a product, they just open the register and hand me a dollar rather than redoing the transaction.  That was the first time that I really saw the value of a coupon as pure CASH!  I don't suggest this as a strategy, but wanted to give you an idea of a coupon's value.  Every time I save a dollar on a tube of toothpaste, it's a dollar that I didn't have to spend!

I had so much fun writing this book, taking photos to help explain various subject matters and reminiscing about how I learned to coupon effectively.  I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I had fun writing it.

More importantly, I hope you can share some of your great deals with me some day!  There's nothing as fun as bringing home a haul of stuff for next to nothing!

From the Inside Flap

Have you seen the shows on TV or have you read on the Internet about people whittling down a grocery bill down to pennies and always wondered why it's done.

This comprehensive guide starts out by teaching you about the background of coupons, why they exist, the rules/policies and how they work for stores. Such background knowledge will help you understand why couponing works for not only couponers but also the stores that accept them. You'll feel confident going into the store for your first real deal because of the well-rounded knowledge, couponing advice as well as the online coupon tips you will receive from Couponing for the Beginner: A Guide to Couponing for the Uninitiated.

The sensible approach in Couponing for the Beginner: A Guide to Couponing for the Uninitiated will help you shop for free for some of your favorite items at some of your favorite stores like CVS, Rite Aid, Target, and Walgreens.  You'll also learn how to find the best savings on items you use every day in your home - learn how to combine them with store sales and promotions, store rewards/loyalty programs, rebates and more.

All you have to do is follow Dean's step-by-step guide that teaches you how to get stuff for free and you'll be shopping for free in no time.  In fact, you'll be wondering why you didn't shop like this sooner!

5.0 out of 5 stars EYE-OPENING and GREAT for the beginner! July 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I LOVE THIS BOOK! In less than a week, I've saved over $36, and earned Extra Bucks at CVS. Easy to understand, with plenty of photos and, thankfully, an easy to read DICTIONARY for all those crazy slang words/phrases. A MUST HAVE for ANYONE feeling the current economic crunch -- or anyone simply savvy enough to save money almost effortlessly. Did I mention that I LOVE THIS BOOK!?!

A lot of great information about the ins and outs of getting the most out of coupons! If you've ever watched the TV show and wondered how they did that, here's a good start at a smaller scale, with the potential to grow. A great way to get some great deals on things you use every day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Information but Somewhat Pricy May 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As an inveterate couponer myself, I'm always interested in books that dispense advice on how best to save money using coupons. Jenny Dean's "Couponing for the Beginner" has a lot of good information that both beginners and more experienced couponers can utilize.

The book is a how-to guide designed for absolute couponing beginners, so Dean begins with the basics, defining the various terms associated with coupons and explaining the various types of coupons that are commonly available. From there, she explains the rules that stores commonly apply when people use coupons, various ways to get coupons, how to organize coupons and plan shopping trips, and, most important, how to maximize the value of coupons by combining offers (she provides several examples with the cost of specific items showing how the various strategies can reduce the cost of specific items, sometimes to zero or below). The material is easy to understand and after reading this book most people should easily be able to whittle a few dollars off the cost of their next shopping trip.

Even experienced couponers should be able to find some value in the book. Dean discusses a number of common retailers and provides links to their rewards sites and specialty sites that provide in depth information about coupons and sales at specific retailers. For people who frequent a particular drug store or grocery, these sites can provide some tips on saving that might not otherwise have occurred to them. The Kindle version of the book contains a couple of dozen links to various coupon related sites, many of which may not be familiar even to those who use coupons regularly.

My only concern with the book, and it's a significant one, is the price. I received the book for free as a promotion, so price wasn't an issue.

Beginning couponing seems daunting. This book is a good starting point for someone interested in getting started. My advice: start small and try and save a few pennies working your way up to "extreme" couponing status.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for beginners June 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a great beginner's guide to couponing. Very thorough but could use a section on using coupons at Wal-Mart. I only had a couple of minor issues with the book. One was that the author tells you in one chapter that you can "buy" coupons on the internet then tells you in the very next chapter that you aren't really buying coupons. The other is when she advises you to look in the recycle dumpsters on school property. Those dumpsters are for fundraising purposes and typically have signs on them telling you that you may not take items out of those dumpsters.
